PCSX2 can now support fan-remastered custom textures

PCSX2 is today’s go-to emulator for the PlayStation 2, and numerous updates continue to bring new features to it. Now the emulator is getting support for texture dumps and replacements, meaning a simple fan remaster with updated textures will soon be available for almost the entire PS2 library.

Contributing developer Stenzek published a PCSX2 build that supports the feature as a pull request on Github over the weekend. Given that Stenzek’s other recent contributions to the project — such as PCSX2’s support for Vulkan — have been widely praised by the community, this project may soon be part of the main build of PCSX2.

The new feature allows you to dump in-game textures to your hard drive, or reimplement textures directly from a folder. Some users have had success running the original textures through an AI upgrader, gently improving the fidelity of various games with minimal effort. Or, you can do as Stenzek did and stick a Fat Chocobo next to Ratchet & Clank’s crate.

Old games never die, nor should they.
