PCSX2 will drop 32-bit and add DirectX12 support

The PlayStation 2 emulator PCSX2 complies with two major technical changes, the addition of DirectX 12 support and the end of 32-bit support. Both of these changes open the door to better performance in some cases, although it means users of older PCs won’t get the benefits of the new PCSX2 version.

The PCSX2 developers are already working on removing 32-bit support from the emulator. If you wish to run the emulator on an old PC, the old PCSX2 version is still available, but dropping 32-bit will allow developers to focus on 64-bit development, and clean up old code to allow (potentially) better performance.

Support for DirectX 12 is also provided by Stenzek, who previously added Vulkan support to PCSX2. As Stenzek explained on GitHub, DirectX 12 “seemed a bit redundant with the existing Vulkan renderer until we found out that the barrier was broken and it was super unstable in Intel drivers”. As it stands, DirectX 12 can be faster than Vulkan even on AMD hardware.

It may be a while before DirectX 12 is fully implemented in a proper PCSX2 release, as developers work to iron out any API-related bugs.

Old games never die, nor should they.
