Prime Video announces new James Bond competition TV series

Amazon’s $8.45 billion acquisition of James Bond studio MGM is complete, and now word is that the retail and entertainment giant is working on a James Bond TV show. This is not a drama based on a super spy, but a competition drama inspired by the character and his journey.

According to Variety, 007’s Road to a Million is a “Bond-style race around the world.” Produced by 72 Films, the eight-episode series features series producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson in partnership with MGM Television.

Reports say the new series predates Amazon’s acquisition of MGM and has been in the works for four years. It’s separate from any potential new 007 content that may arise from Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, the report said.

The show itself will invite contestants to take part in a “global adventure” for a cash prize of £1 million ($1.3 million). Participants will visit Bond locations throughout the film series, take part in physical feats and answer trivia questions about the progression of the 007 series. Filming will begin this year and the show will be broadcast on Prime Video in 240 countries and territories around the world, the report said.

The latest James Bond film is No Time to Die, the fifth and final installment in the series, starring Daniel Craig. Currently looking for a newcomer to play James Bond, Broccoli said the next person to play the role could be a Brit of any race or ethnicity.

By acquiring MGM, Amazon gained a library of more than 4,000 movies and 17,000 TV episodes. In addition to James Bond, MGM also owns the video game movie rights to Tomb Raider. Some of MGM’s other movie franchises include RoboCop, Rocky, The Silence of the Lambs, The Pink Panther, Selma and Louise, Legally Blonde, and Prankster. In terms of TV assets, MGM’s catalog includes The Handmaid’s Tale, Fargo and The Vikings.

MGM is Amazon’s second-biggest acquisition ever, following its $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods in 2017.

In other Prime news, Amazon is developing a Fallout TV series with the creators of Westworld, as well as series based on Life is Strange and Disco Elysium. Amazon also makes video games, and its latest hits are the MMOs New Worlds and The Lost Ark.
