PUBG’s move to free-to-play ‘is by no means a response to Apex Legends and Fortnite’

PUBG’s transition to free-to-play has arrived. Well, it actually arrived – technically it went into F2P two days ago, but went into maintenance immediately. While the move brings PUBG in line with other popular battle royale games like Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone and Fortnite, creative director Dave Curd told game radar The decision to play free has nothing to do with the popularity of the trio.

“This is by no means a response to the other games you mentioned,” Curd said of the three games. “Like us, they’re all great games focused on their unique strengths. We develop our games independently of everyone else and are excited to see what’s coming.”

So what’s the real reason? Curd simply said the team felt the time was right. “Our game has eight maps, an engaged community and our deep gun mechanics, so this was a natural next step and a great way to introduce more players to our world,” he said. “I know a lot of people are interested in PUBG: Battlegrounds, but have never played it for various reasons – now is the perfect time to start.”

PUBG’s free game update brings new features like tactical gear, new tutorials, and an updated training mode. However, the developers explained on Discord that matchmaking has been delayed in some regions due to an “increase in players trying the new tutorial mode.” As a result, tutorial matchmaking has been disabled for legacy players.
