Resident Evil 4 HD Project is an impressive remake for fans, and it’s out now
With the release of the fan-made Resident Evil 4 HD Project remaster mod, Resident Evil 4 is finally getting the PC version it deserves. Eight years in the making, several aspects of the game have remained the same: it’s a “full graphics remake,” so expect vastly improved textures, models, lighting, effects, and more.
The project has attracted a lot of attention over the years, mainly because of the enormous effort that went into it. As Rich wrote last week, the project’s lead creators have gone to great lengths to improve the graphics, including field trips to the locations that inspired the original game, as well as painful deliberations on rock textures.
That’s it, but it also improves menus, cutscenes, pre-rendered video, and fixes some long-lingering “sound bugs and broken/missing effects,” which, according to the project’s website, are ports of the game’s myriad result. To play this HD remaster, you need to own Resident Evil 4 on Steam, which has been specifically tested for version 1.0.6 or 1.1.0. You can then download the files from the official HD project page and follow further instructions posted there.
It’s a long, labor-intensive homage to a classic game that stems from the creator’s frustration with Capcom’s light-touch handling of the PC version. Capcom hasn’t forgotten about Resident Evil 4: a VR version released late last year for Oculus/Meta Quest 2, though, which will get a multiplayer mercenary mode later this year.
While it hasn’t been officially announced, Capcom may be currently working on a remake of Resident Evil 4, just as it did with Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. According to reports in 2020, a release is expected sometime this year.
