Rockstar is funding Remedy’s AAA Max Payne remake

The Max Payne remake comes from Remedy Entertainment, the studio that originally created the series. The remake will contain both Max Payne and Max Payne 2 in a single game. It will be funded by Rockstar (the series’ current overseer), developed using Remedy’s Northlight engine, and will be similar in scope to “a typical Remedy AAA game production” like Control.

“Max Payne has always held a special place in everyone’s heart at Remedy, and we know millions of fans around the world feel the same,” Remedy CEO Tero Virtala said in a press release. “We’re very excited to be working with our partners at Rockstar Games again for the opportunity to bring the story, action and atmosphere of the original Max Payne games back to players in new ways.”

The Max Payne Remake will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. The project is currently in the “concept development stage”. In other words, it’s not yet in full production, and you can expect more information about the game, let alone a release date.

Released in 2001, the original Max Payne was known for its neo-black trim and Matrix-inspired bullet time mechanics. Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, purchased the rights to the series in 2002 and published Remedy’s sequel, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, in 2003. Rockstar itself developed the last entry in the series, Max Payne 3, which was released in 2012.

According to the press release, “Under the agreement, Remedy will receive royalties after Rockstar Games recovers its development, marketing and other costs of publishing and publishing the game.”
