Sega exited the arcade business in Japan, ending a more than 50-year run in the entertainment space. Sega’s arcade division was hit especially hard in 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic put nearly all social gatherings on hold, culminating in the sale of 85% of its arcade and entertainment center business by parent company Sega Sammy to Genda Inc. .

This includes assets such as consoles and associated prizes from Sega, from which Genda Inc. has purchased the remainder as of this week.

While Sega isn’t the only operator in the arcade space to suffer major losses, it’s one of the most iconic. A mainstay of the arcade business in Japan, Sega was forced to close its Akihabara Building 2 arcade in September 2020 due to the expiry of lease contracts for the regular buildings in which it operates and uncertainty over the future of such businesses. COVID-19 pandemic.

Once the rest of Sega’s arcade shares are fully transferred to Genda, Sega Entertainment will be renamed Genda GiGO Entertainment, and all Sega brands at these locations will be changed to GiGO.

Hisashi Kataoka, chairman of Genda GiGO, said in a statement: “Sega stores across the country will change their store names to GiGO to express our gratitude for Sega’s 56-year history and our desire to be the place to meet people’s desire for true entertainment. Desire for an oasis of longing.” Discovered by VGC. “We’ll start with Ikebukuro, Akihabara and Shinjuku. Then we’ll go nationwide.”

The positive news here is that Sega will still make and sell arcade machines for now, even though the Japanese arcade market has shrunk considerably since its heyday in the 1980s. Alternatively, you can always start your own Sega arcade game by purchasing some mini-copies of last year’s release.
