Splitgate’s first season officially kicks off on January 27 as developer 1047 Games reveal more What players can expect in the latest update to the Halo-meets-Portal shooter. The biggest addition is the PC and console map maker available for custom matches. Interestingly, these custom maps can also be co-designed with up to 8 players, albeit with some limitations.
1047 Games emphasizes that currently the only way to share these maps is by hosting custom lobbies, but as the game continues to evolve, this mode will evolve further. Also adding capture the flag and evolution modes, the CTF option features a flag bearer that can’t easily win each round.
Evolution is a variant of Showdown and has a loadout list that gets better and better as the game goes on. Every time one team wins a round, the other team gets a loadout of upgrades as part of the system to make each encounter more fun and skill-dependent.
You can expect a Battle Pass that includes 100 levels of unlockable cosmetics and skins — some free, some part of paid packs — and graphics improvements under the hood on a technical level. Finally, the Foregone Destruction map has been overhauled and will be added to a simulation map called Hotel later this season. This level will be used for Takedown, Evolution and Showdown in 3v3 games.
Splitgate has established itself as one of the best free-to-play games on the market right now, combining excellent gunplay with strategic portal combat. Even with games like Halo Infinite now, Splitgate’s audience continues to grow, and its PlayStation user base has grown even after Microsoft’s Xbox console-exclusive release.
