Star Wars Battlefront 3 didn’t happen, report says

EA has announced three new Star Wars games, but the Battlefront series is clearly not part of the publisher’s plans. According to a report by VentureBeat, DICE, the developer of the 2015 and 2017 Battlefront games, has no plans to make a third entry in the series.

The report says DICE will focus on the Battlefield series in the future, with the development of EA’s Star Wars game being overseen by Respawn. DICE’s third Battlefront game wasn’t planned in the first place, Grubb says Twitter.

EA has ambitious plans to grow the Battlefield franchise with multiple new projects in the future, so it makes sense for DICE to focus on the franchise’s future development. It’s no surprise that Battlefront 3 isn’t in the works, as it was previously reported that it won’t happen due to licensing fees.

The VentureBeat report also mentioned licensing costs, saying EA is mitigating some of its risk by putting DICE on other projects. EA has been paying Disney to license its Star Wars games, and Respawn’s three new games will continue to do so, but the terms of that arrangement were never disclosed.

DICE’s Battlefront and Battlefront II have combined to sell more than 33 million copies, and while new content support has ended, the sequel still has an active player base today. As many will recall, Battlefront II’s release was marred by controversy over its loot crates, which were quickly removed. Esports.com.tnteamed up with EA to try to gain a deeper understanding of the future of the Battlefront franchise.

DICE plans to support Battlefield 2042 with ongoing updates and new seasons of content as part of its live service approach. There are also rumors that some parts of Battlefield 2042 may become free-to-play to help revive the player base.

DICE is also currently in the conceptual stage of its next project, according to insider Tom Henderson. However, we don’t know what the game is. EA hasn’t made any official announcements, but CEO Andrew Wilson recently said that the Battlefield series may follow Call of Duty: Warzone and Halo Infinite Multiplayer and release free-to-play games.

Respawn is now overseeing the development of three new Star Wars games. These include a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a new FPS, and a strategy game from outside studios. EA is no longer the sole publisher of Star Wars games on consoles and PC. Check out our roundup of all the new Star Wars games currently in development.
