Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel should feature Merlin as protagonist

Electronic Arts announces plans to produce three More Star Wars games, developer Respawn oversees all of them. One of those games is a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, confirming reports that we’ll be hearing announcements about a Fallen Order sequel this year. This is good news for me. Playing Respawn’s Star Wars action-adventure was one of my favorite experiences of 2019, so I’m excited about the potential to continue the Stinger Mantis crew adventure. But if I can make one suggestion for a sequel, I think Respawn should swap out who the protagonist of the next game is. We should play Merlin instead of Carl.

In Fallen Order, Merlin is one of the last surviving members of Dathomir’s Night Sister clan. Nightsisters are basically space witches who use variants of Force magic to perform arcane-like magic, of which Merrin seems to be particularly good at it. After Merrin meets Cal, the two bond under the shared belief that they are the last of their respective orders, and she joins him in the fight with the Stinger Mantis crew. She added some wonderful frivolity to the dynamism of the crew, and actor Tina Ivlev did a great job of delivering Merlin’s voice and portraying Merlin as this lovable, socially awkward person, with dry Irony hides that side of her.

It’s time for a Star Wars game to get spooky, and what could be more delightfully spooky than playing a space witch? Since the Nightsisters are essentially just witch variants of the Jedi, Merrin fits most naturally with the established game mechanics in Fallen Order. In the game, we see Merlin using her powers to remotely move objects, so she’s already a bit like Cal’s Force Push and Pull. Her ability to teleport into hard-to-reach places is also a natural replacement for Cal’s double jump.

But that’s where Merrin differs from Cal, and I think Respawn could enable some interesting new game concepts. Merlin has shown the ability to resurrect the dead, empower others, hide objects, and throw pus as a deadly explosion – and that’s exactly what we’ve seen. If Merrin is like the other powerful Nightsisters, she’ll have additional skills like being able to suppress weak minds and make them obey her will. Nightsisters are also generally very athletic, adept at melee weapons and bows. Since most people are learning how to brew both beneficial and harmful potions, Merlin may have a knack for making both beneficial ointments and deadly poisons.

Basically, if Respawn wanted to make a version of Fallen Order that would let you play more of a Dark Side user than a Jedi, but make sure you were still a hero, Merlin would fit the bill perfectly. I think this will help keep the Fallen Order sequel from feeling too bland. Also, it saves Respawn from having to come up with some weird reason why Cal has to relearn abilities he should already know from the Fallen Order event (I put up with it for Samus, but Fallen Order isn’t Metroid). Transform Cal into more of a teacher role, where he imparts the skills he learned in Fallen Order to Merrin – allowing her to combine Jedi abilities with the witchcraft of the Night Lady.

Also, between you and me, I’m so, so tired of playing Star Wars games as a human. The Old Republic offers a decent option, but most modern Star Wars games let you play as humans – Battlefront II, Fallen Order, Squadrons and (presumably, unless there are plans to overhaul character customization) Aspyr’s upcoming PS5 and PC Knights All of the characters in the Old Republic remake are human protagonists. It’s done. We’ve seen the Star Wars universe through human eyes many times. We don’t have to keep writing those stories.

The Fallen Order sequel starring Merlin is a safe way to mix things up, because Sister Night is still human-like. But at least they’re still alien in appearance, which opens up a ton of possible storylines that Respawn can explore that many Star Wars games don’t have. Especially if the sequel takes place after the Battle of Fallen Order, when the Galactic Empire was still in its heyday, so Palpatine’s xenophobia would spread across the galaxy. Carl is a Jedi outcast, but he’s still human and thus has more chances than Merlin in the galaxy ruled by the Empire. How does this make her feel? How does this make Cal feel when/if he notices it? Will this change the dynamic between them in any way? These are the questions I need to answer.

In my opinion, I see the Merlin-starring Fallen Order sequel as the case with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. A possibly shorter game, but with a tighter core game loop, eliminating everything that felt a little irrelevant in the first game (I really don’t want to waste time looking for slightly different poncho and hull colors again), And slightly altered combat with brand new mechanics (Merlin’s witch abilities build on Carl’s Force abilities, similar to Miles’ bioelectricity and invisibility abilities build on Peter’s web slings and wall crawling).

In my ideal world, the sequel to Fallen Order starred Merlin. But I could also see other protagonists in the role, provided that Respawn wanted to use the series as a vehicle for “a story about the Jedi” rather than “a story about the Stinger Mantis crew.” I hope the next Star Wars Jedi game will look like Fallen Order when it first came out, with a brand new, never-before-seen character. Still, Merlin is my go-to as a hero. As the best part of Fallen Order, she should be the focus of this game’s follow-up.
