Steam Next Fest demo: This indie game is Terraria x Diablo

📱

Steam Next Fest is coming, with tons of free game demos. During the week of the event, there are far more games here than anyone can reasonably play, so I’m doing the only thing I can – randomly check out what looks cool and play well in one of them time to report, as well.

Turn Terraria from a side view to a top-down perspective, and you’ll get an idea of the basic vibe of Core Keeper. It’s a crafting and survival game in a post-Minecraft tradition, but it takes place entirely underground and gives you a series of bosses to hunt down in pursuit of an overarching goal.

Loading Core Keeper for the first time makes a strong first impression with its powerful effects. Knockdown blocks make up the bulk of this type of game, and they all end with a satisfying pop—a small thing, but it’s the kind of detail that makes Core Keeper feel quality right away.

Combat is also good. It’s not as straightforward as a traditional ARPG in Diablo, but the top-down perspective and procedurally generated underground environment give it a similar flavor. It’s also fully playable in co-op with up to eight players.

You can check out the demo for yourself on Steam, or take a quick look at the trailer below.

Core Keeper is coming to Steam Early Access on March 8th. To check out more indie games in the meantime, you can follow this link.
