Stellaris’ Unity Rework arrives next week

The star-borne grand strategy game Stellaris is about to usher in its next big patch. The Libra patch will be released on February 23rd, and it focuses primarily on balance changes and bug fixes, although it also includes some nice little additions. The Libra patch also introduces a rework to the Stellaris unified system that will have a major impact on how you play the game going forward.

Unity will be a more important consideration once the patch goes live on the main branch of Stellaris. You can check out the official patch notes for a full overview of every change made, but the overall gist of the unified rework is to allow the “tall” playstyle to be more competitive with the “broad” approach of accumulating as much territory as possible.

The rework makes recruiting leaders and reforming governments require unity, and you’ll be able to use unity to unlock new planets to level up. You can already generate unification in a number of ways, but now Autochthon monuments and similar structures will generate a certain amount of unification based on the number of elevated perks your empire has.

Here’s a list of changes worth reading before you start your next game. There’s more to consider: there are two new custom star systems, three new anomalies, and two new archaeological sites: the Shapeshifting Mask and the Rage Sage. If you own a Plantoid, Lithoid, Necroid or Aquatic species pack, you’ll find that they now also have pre-smart pops to discover.

The patch also makes a series of improvements to Stellaris’ AI, allowing it to more specialize its planets by swapping buildings on the planets it controls. This might seem like a bit of cheating, but it’s largely invisible to the player – the result is that the AI player ends up using their planet more efficiently.

Another change to the game’s AI is how it handles crises. As the developer explained in the comments, it will consider a war-style response to the crisis. If you are hit by a crisis, if you use Take Point, your allies will follow you as they will act as if you are in a war together.

The patch is currently in the beta branch, so you can try it out right now. Otherwise, when Libra arrives on February 23rd, you’ll be able to dig into unity rework and everything else. You can expect it to unlock at 1AM PST / 4AM EST / 9AM GMT / 10AM CET.
