This Dark Souls 3 mod will satisfy your Elden Ring cravings


The Elden Ring is just around the corner, and many players are looking for new ways to moderate their excitement—if only for a little while. After all, there’s only so much in the Soulsource game, and after you’ve played it so many times that you can see where every item and enemy is, you lose a little bit of magic.

But what if there was a way to rekindle the experience? A way to preserve the combat and settings that make FromSoft games so great, but the systemic changes that make the whole world look new again? Sure, every Souls game has random mods that turn every enemy into a Frankenstein monster, but some of those virtual dice are a little too brutal for us. We prefer mods that keep things more static, reshuffled items and enemies, while overhauling many of the game’s lesser-used features.

Enter Convergence, an overhauled mod for Dark Souls 3 that gives players a whole new way to get to know the Lothric and its inhabitants.

Originally released in August 2020, Convergence adds a ton of new content while remixing many of Dark Souls 3’s existing enemies, items, and systems. Most enemy placements are brand new, along with countless item modifications and campfire relocations.

Even more impressive is the new boss lineup made exclusively for the mod. Players can also see a plethora of new weapons, armor sets, and other stat-boosting items, introducing even more build variety (and fashion choices) to the game.

Convergence also has some much-needed rework for bosses like Highlord Volnir

From the moment you crawl out of the coffin in the ash cemetery, it’s clear how much convergence has changed. Not only is you greeted by a vastly different environment – charred entire areas, piles of charred corpses on the main road – but there’s also a new boss to contend with.

As you walk through the fog gates that used to be the Iudex Gundyr, expecting to see gigantic armored enemies, you come across Firelink’s watchdog, a fiery version of the Sulyvahn beast. While Gundyr is far from a bad boss, Firelink’s watchdog sets a more aggressive pace.

Convergence also has some much-needed overhauls of bosses like the Cursed Rotten Great Forest and High Lord Vonir. The former has been replaced by an arch druid who casts poison, while High Lord Volnir now strides across a new boss arena, casting dark spells and hunting you down with ferocious scythe attacks – their encounters Much better than the original.

Fusion makes Dark Souls 3 feel like a brand new FromSoft game

One of the other major changes to Convergence is a strong focus on magic and spellcasting – and the Elden Ring looks set to continue its calling. The three schools of magic in Dark Souls 3 have expanded in Convergence into twelve sub-schools, each with a range of new spells. More spells mean more FP, so Convergence also introduces FP regeneration by default, encouraging you to apply magic into your balanced strength builds. After all, why wouldn’t you want to cast a spell that summons a bone wheel skeleton?

What makes Convergence so special – and so relevant to the upcoming Elden Ring – is that it makes Dark Souls 3 feel like a whole new FromSoft game. It reignites the fusion of fear and wonder that comes from not knowing what’s around the corner. The pounding heart of carrying thousands of souls and not knowing where the next campfire will be; the fear and temptation of an unknown boss behind a foggy door; and the excitement of trying a weapon or spell you know nothing about.

Knowing the geography of the world by heart, but discovering that everything in it is so unfamiliar, is as refreshing as not knowing the game at all. What used to be so confident now makes me hesitant, and I find myself looking around cautiously, afraid of what awaits me.

Even if you’ve completed Dark Souls multiple times, the Convergence mod is reminiscent of the same exciting mix of danger and discovery that awaits us in the vast open world of Elden Ring.
