A private collection of more than 500 pieces of retro computer and technological history was destroyed by a Russian bomb in the city of Mariupol. The Ukrainian war was a tragedy on many levels, but it was a far cry from the senseless taking of lives by invading Russian troops, but the devastation of the Mariupol Computer Museum is still harrowing.

According to reports, the Mariupol Computer Museum in Ukraine is a private collection of more than 500 pieces of retro computing, game consoles and technology from the 1950s to the early 2000s. Destroyed by a bomb. pic.twitter.com/7xKi3yYjthMarch 23, 2022

Mark Howlett highlighted the breach on Twitter, confirmed by Ukrainians Software and Computer Museum Account, operates museums in Kharkov and Kyiv. Dmitry Cherepanov, owner of the Mariupul series, is reported to be safe, although his collection of computers, consoles and various technologies from 50 years of computing has been wiped out.

“Neither my museum nor my house,” Cherepanov wrote on his Facebook page it8bit.club.

The museum itself may have disappeared, but Cherepanov has been documenting his collection of exhibits online for some time, and while that’s all that’s left, it’s still a worthwhile resource. There are many fascinating old machines, including the Commodore C64, which still has a place in my heart as the first computer I fully owned. Love that little guy. Although I did trade my brother’s Spectrum 128 for an Amiga 500.

In addition to images and information about all 120 computers and consoles in his collection, Cherepanov hosts RetroBit Radio on the website. If you feel the need for an 80s/90s gaming vibe, it’s also worth your time.

If you have any memory of the music of the old demo scene, it will be a real nostalgia. Cherepanov has set up a Paypal account for donations, details of which you can find on his Facebook page.
