Valheim Servers: How to Set Up a Dedicated Server for Multiplayer

Want to set up a Valheim server? Building a majestic fortress, slaying Valheim bosses, and drinking a tall glass of mead with your friends is part of what makes Valheim such an addictive survival game – but the way Valheim multiplayer works is prone to errors. You can create multiple characters, and their inventory and skill progress will transfer across multiple Valheim servers, allowing you to drop into a friend’s server and start an adventure together without having to start from scratch in a new map.

However, if you’re not interested in playing the game yourself, and your Viking journey takes place entirely on a game server hosted by someone else, you might run into some issues. Valheim is still in early access, so – in our experience – the connection isn’t always stable, and if you’re trying to play the game while the console is offline, you’re out of luck.

where is that Valheim Dedicated Servers come in. You can host a dedicated server on your PC that you can let your friends hop on even when you’re not gaming, or you can pay a hosting service to run one for you, 24/7. The good news is that in either case, you don’t have to start from scratch – we’ll walk you through the process of transferring your save files to your new Valheim server.

How to Set Up a Dedicated Valheim Server

To set up a dedicated server in Valheim, you must first download Valheim Dedicated Server Tools on Steam – This can be accessed through your Steam library by selecting “Tools” in the upper right corner.

Before running this server, you need to edit some information. Right-click on the Valheim Dedicated Server in the library and go to Administration and Browse Local Files. This will open a folder on your computer called Valheim Dedicated Server. Before you start fiddling with it, make a copy of “start_headless_server.bat” as a backup.

Right-click “start_headless_server.bat” and click “Edit” to open the file in Notepad. The line starting with “valheim_server” is where we can customize the server information.

  • -name “my server” – Replace “My Servers” with the name you want to appear in the server list.
  • -port 2456 – This is the port that will access the Internet. You need to set up port forwarding on your router to allow the server to communicate with the internet this way.
  • – world “focus” – This is the name of the world that will be hosted. If you already have a world you want to host on your PC, enter its name here – otherwise, a new world will be created.
  • – password “secret” – This is your server’s password. You may want to change this setting or we will be able to get in and steal your blueberries.
  • -save directory [PATH] – You can add this to tell Valheim where to store your hosted world. The Windows default is %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowIronGateValheim

Save your file (and make a backup) – now you can start it. Start the Valheim dedicated server – you may need to allow it through the firewall – when you see the message “Game server connected”, everything is up and running.

To stop the server, press CTRL+C in the command window. Obviously, if you exit by closing the window, the server may keep running in the background – which is not what you want.

How to connect to the Valheim server

Once the Valheim server is running, you can add it to your Favorites in Steam and launch Valheim from there. At the top of the Steam window, click View, then Servers – on the Favorites tab, click Add Server in the lower right corner.

If you host the server yourself, or if you’re on the host’s home network, you’ll enter your internal IP address followed by a colon and the port you chose to use during setup – something like 192.168.1.7 :2456.You can Find your internal IP address By typing ipconfig in the command prompt.

Your friends on a different home network will need your external IP address, which you can find by typing “what’s my ip” into Google. They will be used in conjunction with your port number.

If you’ve paid for third-party hosting, they’ll give you an IP address and password, which you can enter into your Steam Favorites the same way.

If your Valheim server is not responding, you can refresh your Steam server page by switching tabs – you may need to wait a moment for Steam to register with the server. As a server administrator, you can set permissions by adding your Steam ID to the following text file:

  • admin list.txt – Grant administrator privileges, including Valheim console commands
  • Banlist.txt
  • allowlist.txt

How to transfer your Valheim save to a server

If you and your Viking buddies have already made progress in the Valheim world and you want to upload it to your new server, good news – it’s entirely possible.

If you are hosting a world you own, just change the -world value in start_headless_server.bat to the name of the world.

If you want to host a friend’s world, have them send you the .db and .fwl files from their Valheim Worlds folder (found in AppDataLocalLowIronGateValheimworlds) and save them in your folder in Valheim Worlds and follow the instructions above.

If you want to upload the archive to a third-party server, you need to upload using FTP software such as Filezilla. After logging in with the server’s credentials, upload the local “Worlds” folder to the server’s “Save” folder.

If your friend is sending you a world to host, you must copy the .db and .fwl files to your Valheim Worlds folder before uploading them to the server – if you upload directly from the downloads folder , this will not work.
