Valheim workbench upgrades and how to fix tools

The first thing you need to build in Valheim is a workbench. Without it, you won’t be able to upgrade or craft new gear, or repair any broken tools. While initially building a workbench is fairly straightforward, you’ll soon find that a bunch of upgrades and new gear are locked behind higher level workbenches, and your poor level 1 workbench is only good for rags and basic tools. If you want to fight Valheim bosses and progress in the game, it’s not a good look.

When you start in Valheim, you can pick up some basic materials to craft a hammer, which is essential for building structures.you need to put your walheim workbench By building the roof so you can use it – we recommend building a complete structure – use our Warheim building guide – so you can go ahead and add things like chests, beds and a cozy indoor campfire (of course proper ventilation).

When you use your tools, whether it’s a Valheim weapon in combat or an axe for chopping trees, you need to repair the damage they take – they build up wear and tear and eventually snap. Here’s how to upgrade your workbench in Valheim and how to use it to repair tools.

Valheim Workbench Upgrade

To upgrade your workbench in Valheim, you need to craft skilled items and place them near the workbench. These items have a gold star in the corner of the crafting menu, and each time you build one, your crafting table will be upgraded by one.

  • chopping board
  • tanning rack
  • Azer
  • Tool holder

Annoyingly, to craft these items you need a lot of resources, which can be hard to keep track of. Here are some items you may need and where to find them.

  • flint – Can be found near the water
  • bronze – Crafted at a forge using copper and tin
  • Hosiery – Obtained from felling birch and oak trees
  • Buckskin – Obtained from killing deer
  • leather scrap – Obtained from boars
  • iron – Made from smelting scrap iron
  • obsidian – Mined from iron pickaxes in the mountains

How to Repair Tools in Warheim

Over time, as you use tools, they wear out and, in some cases, completely break down. You can see the remaining life of the tool in the upper left corner, it’s a thin bar below each item. When the bar is flashing red, you can no longer use it and you will need to take it to a workbench to fix it.

To interact with the workbench, just click the hammer icon to the left of the right workbench frame, highlighted above. You also don’t need any resources to repair items in Valheim, it’s completely free. It’s also important to note that if you spawn workbenches, you can work in complete safety, as monster spawning is suspended inside the player’s base.
