Xbox Creator Almost Fired For Saying Gaming Is Like Masturbating
Xbox creator Seamus Blackley almost got hit back in 2001 for likening the game to masturbation.
In a Twitter interaction today, one user shared a quote from Bloomberg reporter Dina Bass, who wrote, “Games are like masturbation. Everyone does it and no one wants to talk about it.” To which Bass responded, Here’s her quote from Seamus Blackley in the fall of 2001, weeks before the original Xbox release.
Following the interaction, the Xbox creator himself admitted on Twitter, “This sentence almost got me fired from Microsoft.” He elaborated a bit in the post, saying it was a sentence “that some conservative executive spouses read. passed it, and then… I was called to Building 4 so to speak.”
Looking back and more tweets Offers are discussed between Blakely and Bass. In 2019, Blakely thanked fans of the original Xbox, to which Bass replied, “What about those of us who interview you while you’re elaborating your theory that your game is like masturbation? (My editor won’t let me join whatever I It’s a story no matter how hard you try).”
At the time, Blakely said his comments got him into “a lot of trouble” and that “Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates were very upset with him”.

After announcing that Microsoft would buy Activision Blizzard for nearly $70 billion (pending regulatory approval), Blakely came out and said he was “disgusted” by the news because of its relationship with Activision Blizzard about its company culture.
