Turning everyday appliances into Doom consoles is a sport. We’ve seen FPS games run on everything from digital camera displays to restaurant order systems, even holographic displays. Thanks to the developers at Adafruit, id Software Classic is now playable on gaming PCs smaller than a credit card, provided you’re less prone to hand cramps.

The Adafruit QT Py Doom playback device (codename PINKY) uses an ESP32 Pico v3 02 SoC as its core, with dual Tensilica 240MHz CPUs and 2MB of PSRAM. The device is also equipped with a 1.3-inch TFT display and a bunch of tiny micro switches to activate, thus fulfilling the system requirements of the classic shooter.

The device uses Prboom’s Retro-Go port, an overhauled version of the original Doom engine. While installing games onto non-traditional devices often requires some tinkering, Adafruit says the DOS shooter “almost works” after loading the shareware DOOM1.WAD file from an SD card.

Adafruit thinks PINKY might be the smallest “playable” Doom device out there, which sounds more like a challenge than a selling point. It’s worth noting that while the game has appeared on calculators and tiny Nintendo Game and Watch consoles in the past, we don’t recall seeing it running on something that might fit your wallet.

PINKY is still in development, but Adafruit says it plans to reach out to Doom creators John Romero and John Carmack for their opinions on the little device. Not everyone likes to shoot the inhabitants of hell with little buttons, but playing a classic shooter on something this small might be worth trying at least once in your life.
