Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Master’s new event makes players want to die

Yu-Gi-Oh: Master Duel just kicked off its first major post-launch event at the Xyz Festival, and it’s proven popular enough to give the game some of the best player counts since launch. The structure of the event also allows players to take their decks in some, uh… unexpected directions. Players don’t want to win now, they want to die as soon as possible.

The Xyz Festival awards medals for each competition you complete, which determine the rewards you can earn. Winning earns more medals than losing, but if you build a deck full of card effects that deal damage to yourself, you may lose so quickly that you lose faster than you win.

So now the game’s subreddits and Steam forums are full of discussions about the so-called “suicide” or “self-immolation” decks that dominate the event. Some players are happy to see something so strange happen, while many others would rather play the game as expected. Either way, this may not be the result Konami wanted.

The Xyz Festival is scheduled to run until February 24th.

Our guide to the best Yu-Gi-Oh duel masters starter decks won’t help you lose games any faster, but it will help you get a head start once the metadata returns to being win-centric.
