12 minute review

One of the puzzles in the adventure game Gabriel Knight 3 is notorious for being illogical. This A terrible puzzle compared to all others-the pinnacle of design makes you ask yourself “How did I think of that?” When playing 12 Minutes, I had six exact feelings. It uses a time loop to make You experience its frustrating and dull puzzles time and time again.

You start 12 minutes back to your small apartment as an unnamed man, where your wife greets you with candlelight desserts and a surprise: she is pregnant. A few minutes later, a policeman kicked the door open, accused your wife of being the murderer, and strangled you. Enter the time loop: still breathing heavily, you appear at the door of the apartment again. Knowing what will happen next, how do you stop the police from killing you?

Earlier, I thought the answer was to classify every action the character took in 12 minutes, and there were some at first. I feel smart because I noticed that my wife was thirsty and would reach out for a drink in a few minutes. I can use that. The light switch in the bedroom is broken. If I lure him in, the police will turn it on. Another small victory. But after experiencing some similar basic discoveries, 12 minutes has largely become a progressive game of rote memorization.

I figured out how to bring down the police for the first time and started asking he The problem felt like a victory, but when I finished 12 minutes, I went through the same steps at least a dozen times, trying to find a new story path or dialogue tree, dividing it from every decision I could make at the time out. Towards the end, I spent an hour clicking on the same conversation with my wife to fast forward so that I could set up another scene with the police so I could see if a different decision here or there would open up new clues or Centimeters of progress.

There is nothing more ridiculous in 12 minutes than the puzzle in Gabriel Knight 3, but compared to combining random inventory items in an adventure game, repetition ultimately makes solving the puzzle more punitive. When I stopped playing for a night and thought about how I would spend the last three hours, I remembered the groundhog day scene where Bill Murray used his infinite loop to plan a perfect bank robbery and wandered with a bag of cash. 12 Minutes is a game about all the cycles of Groundhog Day no Demonstrated before that moment of huge reward, he may try and fail again and again.

The film wisely skipped that kind of boring content. If you do this in the game, then I don’t think you have much to play. But I never really felt that 12 minutes even gave me the joy of return, or more often just annoyance, the breakthrough depends on a certain item I know but did not use at the right time, or the nth by repeating the same action The trip finally worked.

“12 Minutes” is particularly frustrating because it contains nothing but a mysterious time loop. Even though the puzzles of adventure games bother me, I know that there are some jokes and new places to explore as a reward for overcoming them.

Despite the selection of big-name actors William Dafoe, Daisy Ridley and James McAvoy, “12 Minutes” seems to have no interest in enriching these characters beyond the minimum required by the plot. We understand the deep, dark secrets of these characters, but we basically don’t have time to be with them right now-even though time is the richest thing in 12 minutes. It never had the opportunity to ask questions such as “What did you do today” or “How is our marriage going?” Or “Honey, what’s your name?”

Each repeated loop missed the opportunity to add some new dialogue or internal monologue from my character-the small details we saw in independent developer Supergiant games such as Hades and Bastion are very effective. When the actors expressed heavier lines, the sound performance was really great, and I found William Dafoe to be really threatening from start to finish.

Maybe the developer wrote more dialogue and finally edited 12 minutes into the bones to prevent it from being too confusing for players or too expensive to make. Regardless of the reason, the final result is a game that wants to have an emotional impact, but it never gave me anything to grasp. The conclusion is so artificial, I am ready to Alt+F4 and uninstall the game in anger . But 12 Minutes malfunctioned at the end, turning my screen black when playing audio, which also negated my satisfaction. When I quit and reloaded it, my save file disappeared. It basically deleted itself.

This is not the only failure I encountered in 12 minutes, although it is the only truly important failure. I also had another car accident. In several cases, the policeman’s path was blocked, and after handcuffing my character to the floor, he let him walk awkwardly in place. But there are many other moments, “12 Minutes” looks embarrassing-there was a moment when James McAvoy begged for his life, with a heart in his throat, and then a stupid canned “sir?” When I tried to talk to the police When talking and he cannot interact. There is almost no reaction in the conversation, so you can try to convince your wife that you look like a mature lunatic in a time loop, and then say it’s okay-let’s have some dessert! I noticed that some other conversations also assume that I said something in that loop that I didn’t actually say.

These are small things, but in a game where dialogue and characters have important emotional moments, sudden color changes and awkward animations can break the mood. There are some things I do like in 12 Minutes, such as the artistic style and the top-down perspective, which allows you to project a lot of feelings into the character without looking at the face. I am grateful that I can move something around the apartment, even if it is meaningless, and I can flush things into the toilet, just for it.

12 Minutes is an ambitious game for a small development team, but it is ultimately limited by its main ideas. I achieve almost all solutions by arranging the same actions in slightly different ways, but there is almost no creative reasoning or observation, and better mystery games like The Return of Obra Ding are flourishing. Even if I do feel that I have solved some problems smartly, repeating the solution will dull this satisfaction.

After a failure occurred in 12 minutes and my save was deleted, I opened the game folder on the SSD and found a log file containing a list of every action I took and the corresponding game code.By reading that piece of code, I found an anonymous couple Do There are names, they just never appear in the game. In the end, “12 Minutes” at least gave me a secret that I really like to discover.
