MLB The Show – Batting Control Explained
Strike has three control schemes, and they range from arcade-like to more analog-like. Your preference will likely come down to how much you want to be involved. There is no objectively wrong answer, but you may find that more or less control over the position of the bat is the right strategy for you.
Before we start, please note that these three control schemes have one thing in common: in any mode you choose, you can use normal swing, contact swing, or power swing. The controls for each platform are as follows:
- Normal swing: A (Xbox) Cross (PlayStation), B (Switch)
- Contact Swing: B (Xbox), Circle (Playstation), A (Switch)
- Power swing: X (Xbox) Square (PlayStation), Y (Switch)

Directional shots give you eight points to choose from when you’re about to swing. By pointing the left stick at the top, bottom, left, right, or one of the four corners of the batter’s box, you will tend to make contact with the ball in that part of the box and push it in that direction. It helps if you have a good idea of where the ball is and where you want to take it. For example, a fly ball is needed for runners to mark, which means pointing the left stick up and improving your chances of hitting the ball in the air. Conversely, aiming the ball at specific outfield pockets may help propel runners or keep the ball out of possible doubles areas.
This style of play depends on your situational baseball IQ and your ability to read the ball, and the better the pitcher’s “material”, the harder it will naturally be. However, if you think you have what it takes, this is the most popular ball control scheme, and for good reason.
Area
Zone shots are a more nuanced version of directional shots. Instead of dividing the batter’s box into eight sections, the circle shown inside the batter’s box is used to track the final landing spot of each ball. Control this circle with the left stick, your goal is to center the circle on the court position as the ball crosses the plate.
This is harder to achieve than a directional shot as it requires a faster response time as you will be effectively chasing the ball in fractions of a second. However, it’s also the deepest of all batting control schemes, as it allows a keen batter’s eye to make precise contact with every shot. This is the most analog-like control scheme of the three, and the one most commonly used by veterinarians of this series and/or type.
timing
Time control is the least intrusive, so it’s easiest to pick up for beginners or players who don’t want the depth that the other two modes offer. With the timing control, you simply time your swing until the ball crosses the board. That’s it. It’s fairly old-school and probably most appealing to players who haven’t played baseball in years. If you don’t want to worry about bat placement or fine-tuning of contact, you can just focus on timing and let your player’s attributes dictate how good or bad your contact is.
