Major Age of Empires 2: DE update brings new co-op events and campaigns

More than two years after its launch, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition keeps rolling out new goodies. The remastered strategy game just got another major update, bringing a new co-op event, two new co-op events, rewards, bug fixes, and more.
Age of Empires II: DE’s Update 58259 – Intriguing, isn’t it? – A new co-op campaign has been launched, from now until February 14th. This provides a new set of challenges that in turn yield some nice in-game rewards that you can earn by completing set missions within a certain time limit. In the style of similar events the developers have held before, this one lets you complete a series of challenges in sequence, for a total of five. You don’t need to hit them all on consecutive days, but you can only do them at most once a day, so you’ll need to play on at least five different days during the event to do them all.
Rewards vary from day to day, but include things like cheat codes that allow you to increase your population cap or share resources in your team. There are also profile icons and downtown decorations up for grabs. If you log into Xbox Live at any time during the event, you’ll keep all of your unlocked mods and profile icons forever, so it’s well worth it if you plan to keep them.
Elsewhere, the update brings the Alaric and Saladin co-op campaign to the live game, which means there are six full campaigns and five historical campaigns to play. You can find a full list of these in the developer’s patch notes.
The update also brings the usual round of game balance changes and bug fixes — which are long, so check out directly in the patch notes as well — as well as some cool new features for lobbies and matchmaking. For example, Ranked Deathmatch is now in custom lobbies, and there’s a new “Balance Team” button to help you – yes, you guessed it – balance your team in this mode.

In addition to the chunky new update, the Age developers also teased “2022 will be busy!” in the notes. “At the end of last year, we mentioned that Age II:DE was coming soon, and we plan to continue updating and supporting the game for a long time to come,” explained the developer. “It’s the new year, and when we release the January update, we’re planning a lot at the same time and thinking about how best to share our wishes with you (trust us, there’s some really cool stuff in the works!) We know you Interested in this info, so we’ll be sure to follow up once we’re ready to reveal some of what’s in Age II:DE in 2022!” Lovely stuff.
