Valve Improves Elden Ring on Steam Deck

Now that Valve has finally fixed some of the major issues plaguing Elden Ring players on the Steam deck, the company has explained how it improves stability.

In a new discussion with Digital Foundry, Valve coder Pierre-Loup Griffis explains how the company is addressing issues previously reported by players, including frame rate issues raised as a top priority last month.

“On the Linux/Proton side, we have a fairly extensive shader pre-cache system, with multiple levels of source-level and binary cache representations pre-seeded and shared among users,” Griffais said.

“On Deck, we took it to the next level because we have a unique GPU/driver combination to target and most of the shaders you run locally are actually on servers in our infrastructure Prebuilt. When a game tries to publish a shader compilation via its graphics API of choice, these are usually skipped because we find a precompiled cache entry on disk.”

Although the stuttering issue appears to be resolved on the Steam platform, the issue still exists in the standard PC version of the game. Griffis explained that most of the Elden Ring issues were caused by other factors, saying that the shader pipeline-driven stutter wasn’t the majority of the issues the team saw in the game.

“The examples we’ve highlighted recently have more to do with games creating thousands of resources (such as command buffers) in certain locations, which put our memory manager in overdrive when trying to process it,” the developers explained.

“We’re caching these allocations more aggressively now, which seems to help a lot. I can’t comment on whether this is an issue the game has had on other platforms, but we’ve been playing with all of these Deck elements in place and the experience has been very smooth.”

Yesterday, From Software released a sizable Elden Ring patch that nerfs Hoarfrost Stomp and Mimic Tear. Not only that, but the developers have added additional NPC quest options, NPC tracking, and more.
