Best Resident Evil Games: Iconic Survival Horror Series Ranked

When you think of “survival horror,” Resident Evil is probably the first franchise that comes to mind. Capcom’s long-running series is arguably the birth of the genre, not only establishing some conventions with the original game, but also planting the seeds for a legendary universe with one of the most ardent fanbases in video games . However, despite that, not all Resident Evil games are created equal, and there have been some notorious ones over the years, but we’ve rounded up the 10 best Resident Evil games.
No Resident Evil game is off-limits for this list, and you’ll notice that some “main” entries didn’t make the cut for the games that were rocking the spinoff realm. This only works for a few games, but having a number in a game title doesn’t necessarily guarantee it’s good.
10. Resident Evil: Revelation 2

With the return of more traditional horror in the upcoming Resident Evil 7, Capcom has chosen a different route than Resident Evil: Revelations 2. The episodic game sticks to the third-person perspective of its predecessor, but enhances the B-movie cheese and even brings back Barry Burton the Fool as a playable character next to Claire Redfield. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is action-packed but still rooted in survival horror and classic camp movies, and may not push the genre forward or try to reinvent the series, but it does understand what makes it so popular. You just can’t beat those Barry one-liners.

9. Resident Evil 0

A prequel to the series set before the events of Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, the aptly named Resident Evil 0 originally launched as a GameCube exclusive before becoming more widely available. It’s a horrific experience unlike most other games — except perhaps the original — because the zombie threat hasn’t spread widely, or even made it public. Along with police officer Rebecca Chambers, you also have the chance to take on a unique role in the video game – a death row prisoner – while solving dark mysteries.

8. Resident Evil 5

Undoubtedly a controversial game, and certainly a hint that we’ll be showing identity crisis more overtly in the future, Resident Evil 5 ditches pretty much all the horror of direct action. It’s very different from other games so far (including Resident Evil 4), with brighter environments, tons of firepower at Chris’s disposal, tons of set-pieces, and an upgraded Albert Wesker, who essentially is from The Agent Smith Matrix. Is it scary? Do not. Is it as itchy as other games? Do not. Does it manage to deliver an action-thrilling ride that provides some satisfying endings to one of the longest-running plot threads in the series? Clearly.

7. Resident Evil: Apocalypse

Could one of the best Resident Evil games ever become a 3DS exclusive? Well, yes, at least for a short time. Resident Evil: Apocalypse blends the action-oriented gameplay of the first two games with the slow, tense horror of the original. Primarily set on a cruise ship full of infected creatures that want to tear Jill Valentine’s limbs apart, the game works well on the 3DS, especially the Circle Pad Pro accessory for twin-stick combat, which starts To a nice role-story to help fill in what Jill did between Resident Evil 4 and 5. It ended up in HD on everything from PC to Xbox, and even the Nintendo Switch in a few years.

6. Resident Evil Code: Veronica

It doesn’t use the Resident Evil 3 name, but it’s more of a marketing effort to steer players to another game that’s exclusive to PlayStation. Make no mistake – Resident Evil: Veronica is the true third entry in the series, returning to the confrontation between Chris Redfield and Albert Wesker while also seeing The return of Claire Redfield from Resident Evil 2. At the time, it was released on the Dreamcast (and later on the PS2, GameCube, and other consoles) and motion visuals weren’t possible on the old PlayStation, although the playstyle was starting to take off. If you’d prefer to see the story, but in a different genre, Wii orbital shooter Resident Evil: Chronicles of Darkness takes it very seriously.

5. Resident Evil
Resident Evil HD Remake
The first Resident Evil game was revolutionary, not only effectively laying the groundwork for today’s survival horror games, but also because it No Do. Resident Evil doesn’t need massive zombie hordes, crumbling skyscrapers, or a horde of super-powerful giant monsters to instill fear. Instead, it takes a ‘less is more’ approach to horror, delivering fear and twists slowly to make the content more impactful. It’s a lesson that some other games, including Resident Evil 3 a few years later, don’t seem to understand, and while the tank-like controls of the original Resident Evil haven’t aged well, the remake and another HD remake offer visuals greatly improved.

4. Resident Evil Village

A sequel to Resident Evil 7 with a cheeky little “VIII” hidden in the logo, Resident Evil Village is wild in both protagonist Ethan Winters’ reaction to everything around him and the game’s roster of villains. Still, it contains one of the scariest moments of any Resident Evil game – or, really, in any game – and the few allies you meet along the way are usually just as entertaining. Resident Evil Village seems intent on forging further connections with the rest of the series, which occasionally works against it, but the game’s Resident Evil 4-esque European setting and various horror elements make it worthwhile in itself. Yes, even if it doesn’t include the tall vampire lady.

3. Resident Evil 7

After the bombastic and unfocused Resident Evil 6 attempted (and mostly failed) to fully turn the series into a Call of Duty-level blockbuster, Capcom is back on the drawing board with a sequel. However, Resident Evil 7 is more than an homage to the original. Instead, contemplative, tense horror combined with a new first-person perspective limits your awareness of the environment, making every panic worse. Setting almost the entire game in one mansion doesn’t feel limiting either, as the many puzzles, unexpected areas, and gruesome encounter with the Baker family make it one of the best locations in horror gaming history.

2. Resident Evil 4

The game that changed everything… Once again, Resident Evil 4 transforms the series from its tank-controlled, slow-moving, survival past to a more action- and cinematic-focused experience. It doesn’t take away the panic, and Leon’s journey into a remote Spanish village offers terrifying non-zombie enemies and even some terrifying allies. Instead, it just lets the momentary action and shooting fit the vibe that Capcom has been perfecting over the years, though it works well as an entry point for indie games or newbies. This should come as no surprise, considering that Resident Evil 4 was directed by Shinji Mikami, the director of the original game.

1. Resident Evil 2 (two versions)

The original Resident Evil was one of the most important video games of all time — there’s no denying it — but it’s the second game time to turn it from a major stepping stone in the industry into one of the biggest video game franchises. Resident Evil 2 expands beyond the mansion of the first Resident Evil into the greater Raccoon City, giving us a deeper look at who is responsible for the outbreak and how manipulative and powerful the Umbrella Corporation is. Its 2019 remake is the now-playing version, offering much-improved third-person combat controls while telling much the same story for Leon and Claire. Despite better moves, it hasn’t given up on the scare — 2020’s Resident Evil 3 has mostly done that.
