This week’s Build of the Week is also our first reader submission! Linustechtips.com user ungreedy sent us a tip about his custom case mod, which uses a 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System to house an Intel Core i5-4670K CPU, an ASRock Mini ITX motherboard, and an MSI GeForce GTX 750 graphics card. This NES 3.0 version is actually ungreedy’s first custom case model; he says he’s wanted to build a custom NES PC ever since he first saw a build like this done, when his uncle gave him one With a broken NES, he couldn’t stop thinking about what to do with his build.
In the end, this meant taking the NES apart for cleaning (relatively simple), sanding and painting (a bit more complicated – especially sanding the bottom and sanding). The goal of Ungreedy is to keep the exterior as clean as possible with the least number of holes. He wanted to custom paint the case to give it a modern take on the classic NES look. Ultimately, construction took just over seven months.
Ungreedy told us that the hardest part of the build process was setting up the cooling system correctly, spending a lot of time testing fans and CPU coolers. Builders who want to try something similar would do well to follow his advice on extreme patience: such a build requires a calm temper and creative thinking to overcome obstacles that may arise along the way (like trying to squeeze two fans into the body of the NES). ).
