Call of Duty: Warzone Season 3 Patch Notes, File Sizes Revealed

It’s a big day for Call of Duty, as the Season 3 update for Call of Duty: Warzone and Vanguard launches today, April 27. Patch notes for Warzone, along with other key details like file size, are out now. This is another very large update, about 40GB in size on all platforms.

The Monarch Action event, which adds Kong and Godzilla, will be available during Season 3, but not until May 11. At launch today, however, players can choose new Operator Mateo Hernandez by purchasing the new Battle Pass to unlock the character and associated cosmetic items immediately.

Season 3 also brought back the wildly popular and fan-favorite Iron Trials mode (first on Caldera), and another highlight of the new season is a new gulag called Hold, which is set on a ship. The Warzone map now also has more new locations, including the Dig Site, which has a lot of creature skeletons. Additionally, players will immediately notice that Warzone’s skybox has been changed to tease the storm on the horizon. There’s also a new “Destruction” contract that lets players have a vehicle target somewhere on the map. Players who successfully destroy the target will receive an armored truck that is transported by plane.

In terms of general changes, the Season 3 update allows players to use a gas mask while pulling a parachute, while the “Wanted” timer has been reduced. What’s more, players who successfully escape the Gulag will now be closer to their team or drop loading back into the game. Elsewhere, the Season 3 Update removed the confirmation UI when purchasing from the Buy Station. Developer Raven Software said the extra step was creating “unnecessary friction”.

Here’s what’s coming in Season 3

There are also a number of fixes in the new Season 3 update, including the fix for a bug that would cause players to get stuck in the AA turret when interacting with it while it was being destroyed. The update also fixes an issue that caused players to get stuck on stairs.

Season 3 also added new weapons, including the M1916: Marksman Rifle and Nikita AVT: Assault Rifle, while some weapon balance changes were made. The maximum damage of the LMG Charlie has been reduced to 32, and the horizontal recoil control of the 6.5 Sakura 40-round magazine has been reduced to 14%. Meanwhile, with further changes to the sniper rifle, the minimum damage of the Whitley VG has been increased to 31.

These weapons will now one-shot an enemy in the head within their maximum damage radius:

These snipers can now hit enemies in the head with one shot at any range:

  • Sniper Rifle Charlie (MW)
  • ZRG 20mm (BOCW)
  • Three-Line Rifle (VG)
  • Gorenko Anti-Tank Rifle (VG)

These no longer have the potential for a single headshot:

  • Rytec AMR (MW)
  • Sniper Rifle Alpha (MW)
  • Sniper Rifle Charlie (BOCW)

Going forward, Activision will launch Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 this year, which could be a pivotal moment for the series, which has been slowing recently.

Activision Blizzard has recently come under pressure and scrutiny for its workplace culture, as well as controversy surrounding its top boss, Bobby Kotick, who is accused of knowing about and covering up incidents of sexual harassment and abuse.

Plunder adjustment

The hard limit for players in Plunder is to carry a maximum of $1.6 million. While this is an extremely unlikely scenario, we want to make the system more robust to the few players who achieve this feat.

Respawn Revival Adjustment

  • Players no longer spawn with Pistol Charlie (BOCW) as their starting weapon

New Gulag: keep

A roughly symmetrical arena sits on the belly of a ship moored near the coast of the crater, with identical corridors on the perimeter of the other open spaces.

New Location: Excavation Site

The dig site is located between mines and ruins, giving operators the opportunity to rummage through abandoned excavation equipment, tents, and giant skeletons for supply crates and other items.

Gameplay

  • “Breaking” the contract
    • The player will get a vehicle objective somewhere on the map. Destroying targets will be rewarded with deploying armored trucks via planes. Mind you, this armored truck could easily be someone else’s…
  • High value loot area (current season)
    • These areas are represented on the Tac map by the very appropriate “$” sign and will provide the best chance of looting. These areas will be replenished with respawn containers, providing recurring loot opportunities.

In Season 1, we introduced public events during Infil, such as cash drops, to lure players to new loot locations. We are pleased with the results of these “honeypot” opportunities, but we want to go further. Starting with Operation Monarch, we’ll be introducing “High Value Loot Zones” to provide new, fruitful opportunities for players willing to take the plunge.

General adjustment

    • Falling players will no longer be interrupted, allowing them to still pull their parachute to save their lives when falling.
    • No animation is played when the player is an ADS and is affected by the gas from the Nebula V wheel

Gas masks remain an ongoing concern in our quality of life work. It plays a big role in both the gameplay and the instinctual feel of Call of Duty, but we feel like we’ve seen too many videos of players jumping into poison gas from heights, and the game mistakenly prioritizes gas mask animations over parachutes. …..We all know how this situation ends.

  • “Most Wanted”
    • Decrease the timer by…
      • Destroying an opponent reduces the timer by 20 seconds
      • Opening a supply crate reduces the timer by 5 seconds
      • We hope this is a contract that both promotes and rewards aggressive play.
    • Players can no longer directly ping an enemy’s most wanted target using the Tac map.
      • We believe this approach is unfairly punished and provides too high an accuracy to be nearly impossible to counter by the target.
    • The refresh rate of the most wanted targets on the Tac map has been increased to offset the aforementioned removal of the ping.
      • This brings balance and still allows the approximate location of the target to be tracked.

We reviewed the data for the most wanted contracts and we believe improvements are needed to increase their engagement and success rates, while still retaining all the important risk/reward it offers.

  • “Bounty” Contract
    • Improve Tac map refresh rate
      • This is especially noticeable when the target is in the vehicle to better inform the player that a vehicle chase may be required.
  • Deployable buying station
    • When a player pings a deployable buy station, there will now be dedicated audio/narration to better inform teammates of the player’s intent.
  • Redeploy targeting improvements
    • Players redeployed or bought back via Gulag Victory will now spawn near their squad or loadout.

    • Only one perk can be equipped at a time.
    • Looable Perks can communicate with your squad via the ping command.
    • Looable Perks are an addition to Loadout Perks.
    • All Perks die unequipped, but do not drop.

We hope to further increase the value and rewards of loot in the mid-game. For the pace and movement in battle royale, there are always new rewards to be found for players who rotate between locations for a greater loot advantage, and our first steps on this path are Bring individual Perks into loot. Based on our internal testing, this change brings a ton of new player stories, and we’ll continue to roll out additional Perks this way as we review player feedback and data to see how it can improve the pace and experience of Battle Royale . These lootable perks will roll out first in Caldera and then in Rebirth Island.

Respawn Island Adjustments

  • Build Protection Improvements
    • Removed damage reduction scaling system based on ground distance
    • The system will be disabled if the player is close to the ground or an opponent
    • Players with a shield icon only take 25% of the fixed damage
    • Spawn protection will no longer reduce balloon damage

While respawn protection plays an important role in any multi-life game mode, we feel it needs some additional improvements to ensure it cannot be exploited by players. We will continue to monitor player behavior in this regard and make further changes throughout the season if needed.

  • Arms Trading Post Adjustments
    • Reduced expert token drop rate
      • We enjoyed player engagement in the Weapons Trading Post and Expert Token rewards, but felt it was a bit high so we reduced it.
    • Stations will now look for open spaces to drop your rewards
      • We found it a little annoying to pick up loot after you trade weapons, so we optimized this moment.The system will now always look for empty spaces when dropping rewards

Later in the season…

  • Footstep audio improvements
    • We want to prioritize additional audio improvements to footsteps during the season.
  • Swipe camera lock improvements
    • We’ve heard from our community that occasional camera lock during vertical descents can be frustrating and lead to negative outcomes in combat encounters. We are happy to announce that this will be resolved shortly.

User Interface/User Experience

  • buying station
    • Confirmation is no longer required when purchasing

The confirmation box when buying at Buy Station is meant to be good, but we feel that muscle memory is ingrained in the player, double-clicking in a row. This creates unnecessary friction in a potentially hostile combat situation, rather than the possibility of making mistakes. We plan to make additional improvements to the Buy Station experience during the season.

BUG fix

  • Fixed an issue that caused the Ping to be incorrectly positioned when used on a Tac map near a redeploy…
