Hot Drop: Who pretends to be Octane’s dad in Apex Legends?

Hot Drop is GameSpot’s weekly Apex Legends column in which Jordan Ramée takes a closer look at Respawn’s battle royale to provide more insight into the game’s evolution and gain insight into its episodic story and characters.

It’s been an eventful few weeks for Apex Legends. As we near the end of the season 12 quest, Perfect Son, Lifeline, and Octane stumble upon a surprising realization: Octane’s father, Eduardo “Duardo” Silva, isn’t actually his father. The real Eduardo Silva has been dead for a while, which means Apex Legends’ big bad has been an imposter. So the big question is, of course, who the hell is Duardo?

We don’t know much about Eduardo or Duardo, but we have a rough timeline of the lives of these two men. Eduardo was a childhood friend of Darian Che (Lifeline’s father), and the two played at Pecks Labs as children. As a genius, Eduardo will grow up to be the CEO of a galactic pharmaceutical company called Silva Pharmaceuticals.

Eduardo would go on to create Stim, the potent adrenaline drug used by the Titan pilots and eventually used by his son Octavio “Octane” Silva. Eduardo was not a great father or husband, he was married four times and neglected Octavio all his life. I assume somewhere in the Apex Legends timeline that Eduardo dies and Duardo takes his place. Because after that, Octane began to notice some nuances in his father’s behavior, including his willingness to plan a terrorist attack in the Season 7 mission Family Portrait.

We then learned that the attack was actually planned to undermine people’s belief in the Syndicate of foreign ruling groups. Duardo continued the campaign in subsequent seasons, orchestrating the release of the deadly Medusa Vines virus in Season 9’s Quest, The Legacy Antigen, and The Fall of Olympus.

He shied the blame in both cases, leaving the syndicate seemingly responsible for it all. Now, the public blames the syndicate for letting Medusa vines reach Mount Olympus, and for “allowing” a dangerous terrorist (Maggie’s) into the Apex Olympics, all of which are blamed for the fall of Mount Olympus.

Lifeline and Octane have long suspected that Octane’s father was doing everything to sway public perception of the syndicate to the point that calls would be made for the group to accept a new leadership — who better than Silva Pharma’s CEO better? His company, which distributes the cure Medusa vines, has added a more accessible, more “family-friendly” blood campaign to Apex Games (limited-time control mode). He’s also funded a sizable PR campaign with Lisa Stone’s new podcast (she was a reporter interviewing Forge when Revenant stabbed him in the back), suggesting that Syndicate is responsible for many of Outland’s problems.

Lisa Stone doesn’t clock in when she gets off work. From your screen to your ears, her new podcast, sponsored by Silva Pharmaceuticals, will delve into some of the disasters we’ve seen in Outland. pic.twitter.com/LFU5gALdMK

After all, Lifeline and Octane learn the truth about Eduardo and Duardo – the former has been dead for years and his death certificate is locked in the latter’s safe. But who is Duardo? Well, I have a few theories:

Duardo is a simulacrum

That’s unlikely, as all the simulacra in the Titanfall/Apex Legends universe seem to have a very robotic appearance, which means the technology hasn’t advanced enough to make them look human-like. Duardo looks very human.

But it’s also a universe where secret alien technology allows someone to travel back and forth in time, so the necessary technology to make simulacrums look like humans is likely to exist. It’s not a huge stretch of imagination.

The theory is based on the fact that people close to Duardo, such as his son and friends, did not notice any Considerable Changes in his behavior – only small changes. So either Duardo was Eduardo since he was a kid, or Duardo somehow found a way to inherit Eduardo’s memories. As Revenant and Ash see it, simulacra inherit the psychic memory on which they are based.

Duardo is a zombie

Also unlikely, but maybe Duardo is Eduardo after his death and resurrection. Revenant is able to use some terrifying techniques to keep his allies from dying – so it’s not unthinkable that a more advanced version of his death totem exists, keeping Duardo alive as a shadow of his former self.

Duardo is a clone

Well, let’s look at something more likely. Maybe Duardo is just a clone. Are there clones in the Titanfall/Apex Legends universe? Not known to anyone. But like, come on — Respawn could totally write a “he’s a clone” storyline, and we’d all be okay with it. It’s a staple of the science fiction genre.

Duardo is Eduardo…but from another universe

This is my favorite theory. Apex Legends has been dabbling in its multiverse since Season 2, when we learned that Wraith was actually from another universe, and IMC defeated the Militia during the events of Titanfall 2 — and she swapped places with the Wraith of this universe. Then in season 3, Pathfinder accidentally entered another universe, where Revenant managed to kill everyone and rule his shadow army as gods. In Season 5’s quest, all the lore returns to this shadow universe, and the Shattered Ghost collects the fragments of a vision that eventually becomes the ashes of this universe.

As such, Respawn has determined that there are multiple variants of characters in Apex Legends that all exist in a wide variety of universes, each with very different histories. If so, why can’t Duardo be Eduardo from a different universe?

This answers my biggest question about Duardo: what was his motivation? Duardo is the big badass in Apex Legends right now. He is Octane’s abusive father, and wants to take over organizations that directly or indirectly oppose Wraith, Horizon, Mad Maggie, Revenant, Caustic, Bloodhound, Lifeline, and Crypto. But we still don’t know why he took over the syndicate. Duardo already runs one of Outland’s most famous companies – he has a lot of money and influence, so neither division is what he wants. It doesn’t make sense to want to take over the syndicate at the same time.

Granted, greedy rich people tend to just want more money and power, but all things considered, it’s a rather boring motive. I hope Duardo’s motivation is more than simple greed.

Like, maybe Duardo did this to strengthen Outland. Perhaps he came from a universe that was destroyed by some multiverse force, and he came to prepare Outland for an impending threat. Or, heck, maybe Duardo Yes Threatened, he is working to eventually weaken the Syndicate in order to divide Outland and prepare for an invasion.

Either scenario could lead to a war between the universes for many seasons to come. In several ways, Apex Legends is moving towards a potential Titanfall 3 (maybe I’ll discuss that in a future column), and its multiverse war-centric idea sounds pretty cool.

Duardo is an opportunistic guy

This is a less exciting variant of the multiverse theory. Duardo may be working to strengthen or weaken Outland in preparation for an attack on the core world or defense against an invasion of the core world.

This means that Duardo doesn’t have to be from another universe. He might just be someone who looks like Eduardo. We’ve already seen facial reconstructions in the Titanfall/Apex Legends universe – Crypto has to change his face cybernetically to avoid facial recognition while running. It makes sense that Duardo could do the same thing to trick facial recognition into thinking he’s one of the richest and best-known people in Outland.

Duardo is just Eduardo and nobody really dies

A boring and admittedly unlikely theory, but still possible: maybe Duardo was just Eduardo, and no one died – meaning the death certificate found by Lifeline and Octane was just a distraction to distract them from what the person actually was. All that is hidden from the attention. That would go pretty well with Williams, seeing the ghost discover the death certificate of Bengaluru’s brother Jackson Williams. Jackson’s death certificate seems super fake (I still think Bengaluru’s brother is Newcastle, possibly a season 13 playable legend), so maybe Eduardo’s death certificate is fake too.

Lifeline, Octane and Maggie are the only ones who know that Duardo is responsible for what happened at Olympus.

Whatever happens, the revelations about Eduardo and Duardo are likely to shape the story of Apex Legends for several seasons to come. At the very least, the revelation created a split between Octane and Lifeline’s sibling relationship. These two are probably the only people who know the truth besides Duardo, because Eduardo’s death certificate is now on fire. That doesn’t mean there isn’t more evidence out there, but for now, Duardo’s secret is safe.
