Red Bull sacks Formula 2 driver after racist outburst on Twitch
Formula 1 driver Juri Vips’ contract with Formula 1 team Oracle Red Bull Racing has been terminated after a racial slur was used on a Twitch stream.
The incident happened nearly a week ago in which Vips used slurs while playing Call of Duty: Warzone. Another Formula 2 driver, Liam Lawson, was also on hand, but seemed to laugh uncomfortably at the incident. Later in the stream, Lawson also asked Vips to wear a pink red bull hat, according to Eurogamer. The Vips responded with a homophobic response, to which Lawson countered: “Juri, you can’t say that”.
Oracle Red Bull Racing, which currently owns Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen, has suspended Vips’ testing and reserve driver program pending an investigation. The team announced today that it has terminated his contract with Vips, which means he will no longer compete in Formula 2 with the Hitech Grand Prix team.
The news comes after another racist disaster rocked Formula One. A podcast clip recorded in late 2021 shows three-time F1 champion Nelson Piquet Sr. using a racist slur to describe seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.Hamilton Respond on Twitter Said, “I’ve been surrounded by these attitudes and have made it my goal for the rest of my life. There’s a lot of time to learn. Now is the time to take action.”
F1 22 launches this week on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Juri Vips is currently in the game as part of the Formula 2 roster. We have contacted Codemasters for comment.
