Tanks in Company of Heroes 3 will be filthy

The developers at Relic have released a new video about the new artistic changes to Company of Heroes 3 and their attempts at authenticity and fidelity in the upcoming WWII RTS.A dev diary video posted to YouTube discusses how to get tanks dirty, put the correct patches on soldiers’ arms, and make sure when things blow up, they blow up nicely but also really correct.

Specifically, the complex vehicle shader will now change the appearance of the tank based on the environment in which the tank is moving. “The type of dirt you’re going to see on the terrain is the type of dirt that appears on your vehicle,” says lead artist Christian Boldage. The damage will also be more dynamic, with the effects of bullets and shells in the right place.

Another system allows specific soldiers to appear with patches and badges that match the historical division to which they are assigned, as well as helmets and other equipment.

“We watched a lot of World War II documentaries, read some books, technical diaries, just to try and get a sneak peek at what this weapon would look like when it was fired,” says senior artist Michael Musselham. All to make the explosions, gunshots and smoke look like they are in real life.

Company of Heroes 3 will be released this year as the latest entry in Relic’s World War II RTS series.
