Vibration accessories are all the rage lately, with many PC peripherals on the market that can shake under certain conditions. Razer is working on an entire ecosystem designed to provide “immersive” haptic feedback while you’re gaming, and the rather adorable Nari Ultimate is the spearhead here. Gaming chair maker GT has decided to pounce on this niche hype with the recently released GT Throne, which uses vibration motors built into the seat and back to shake you based on audio cues transmitted through your PC. I recently had a chance to test it and (my back) wasn’t impressed.

On the surface, it’s an interesting concept, and overall, the Throne is a very comfortable chair (though it’s a bit high off the ground for my taste). Unfortunately, its main features don’t provide the immersive experience you might hope for. For one thing, it monopolizes your audio output, so you’ll need to plug headphones into the transmitter to use it properly. In my experience, games with vibration feedback enabled are more of a distraction and annoyance than a boon.

On the one hand, the way the motor in the seat agitates the chair is actually physically uncomfortable; it vibrates my spine in a way that I find jarring. The motors hidden in the backrest are less shocking, as they are slightly more subtle, but at best they still do little to add to the gaming experience. The way they respond to audio cues is a bit patchy, so any extra immersion they might provide is diminished by inconsistency. The overall experience is similar to sitting in a malfunctioning but fairly comfortable massage chair.

The GT Throne is a beautiful gaming chair that disables the force feedback system, but there’s nothing special about it that makes it stand out in an increasingly crowded field. Its only gimmick actually degrades its quality, which is unfortunate since it’s certainly responsible for its $475 MSRP.
