IsaacHalo Infinite is finally adding campaign collaboration next month, developer 343 Industries announced today. This will begin with an early test or “flight” that begins the week of July 15.

Microsoft is only testing online campaign co-op, so fans looking to play split-screen co-op locally will still have to wait for an unscheduled future. 343 has always said it will conduct an online campaign co-op test in July, but this is the first time the date has been officially revealed to the public.

Players will need to sign up for the free and open Halo Insider program to board the flight. This test is part of a separate version of Halo Infinite, so any progress you already made in the Halo Infinite campaign will not apply to the network co-op test, nor will any progress you make in the test move with you to any of your An existing campaign may have been saved.

Some Halo fans were frustrated when they learned that Halo Infinite would launch without a campaign collaboration, with lead world designer John Mulkey saying that Halo Infinite’s open-world nature created “a lot of new questions” for the team.

“How do we establish a shared world state? How do we bring fire teams together? How do we determine intent and mission focus? How do we prevent sequences from disrupting the narrative?” Malkey said.

The 343 created the “Action Zone”, which is the maximum distance players in a team can be separated from each other. “If you get too far from your fire team, you’ll get a warning to return to the team. If you ignore this warning and continue, you’ll be killed AWOL and respawned to your nearest teammate, 343 said.

Players will be warned when they are 800 feet away from other players, and will be killed when they reach 1000 feet. “It’s an interesting balance because we want players to enjoy fighting together, but we also don’t want it to feel like the game forces you to be involved, so to speak,” said lead software engineering lead Isaac Ban De said.

“To give you an idea of โ€‹โ€‹the scale in the game: if two of you want to hit a very big target like the exiled dig site, AOO will definitely allow you to deal with that scale target from the opposite side, and there’s plenty of room ‘ Bender added.

Halo Infinite’s online campaign co-op will let players keep co-op campaign saves, or individually isolated co-op saves.

“I’ve played a lot of co-op games where ‘Player 2’ progress basically doesn’t count, and I always find it disappointing,” Bender said.

All progress in the Halo Infinite campaign, whether you play solo or cooperatively, will be preserved and saved to your profile. “I can play the single-player campaign, go into co-op for a few hours, then restart the single-player game with all mission progress, collectibles, equipment found, achievements, and upgrades made in either session. Will remain the same. Gone are the days of playing someone else’s game without progressing,” Malkey said.

343 also confirms that the co-op experience is the same no matter what platform you’re playing on, whether it’s Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, or streaming. Cross-play is supported, with any combination of PC and Xbox for up to four players at a time. Additionally, all co-op play takes place on dedicated servers.

In Halo Infinite’s multiplayer menu, players can form a fireteam and select “Start Co-op” to start the game. 343 also clarified that everyone in the group plays the Master Chief.

As for upgrades and cores, those are tracked separately. If anyone in the group gets a core in co-op, then anyone in the group who doesn’t already have a core gets the honor. Cores can be used independently, and the number of cores and upgrades will apply to each soldier.

“It means you get the benefits of collaboration, but you also have room to express yourself in your personal playstyle,” Bender said. “If one of you wants to focus on upgrading your hanging wall to protect yourself, while your buddy gets the Graappleshot melee upgrade to charge into the enemy’s ranks, you can.”

343 also confirmed that the new mission replay feature will be coming to Halo Infinite alongside the online campaign co-op update. “The more open nature of Infinite brings new creative challenges that don’t exist when missions are broken down into their own discreet levels. You can simply reload the level and replay it,” Mulkey said. “In Infinite, quests are locations in a larger game space than other quest locations. We rely on Tac-Map as your gateway to interacting with individual quests.”

With the update, players can open their own tactical map and select a completed mission, then select “Replay”. Players will be asked to choose a difficulty level and whether to activate any skeletons.

“Setting a replay mission resets it and teleports you (and your fireteam) to that location for the challenge. You’re free to walk away to do something else, fast travel, or continue your main mission furthest away,” 343 said.

Additionally, any upgrades earned in later missions will apply to early missions, and Mulkey said the team is excited to see how players can use higher-level skills and upgrades in early missions.
