The original Wordle Ancestors Scrabble launches a new web-based game
April 13th is National Scrabble Day, and word games are all the rage right now thanks to the huge success of Wordle, and Hasbro and Mattel have teamed up with game developer Scopely to launch a new online version of the game on scrabble.com.
Scrabble.com offers PvP matches against players from all over the world, as well as PvE action when you’re in mode to test yourself against the computer. The game will support matchmaking with players of all skills, a blog and forum where players can chat and learn from experts, and of course the official Scrabble dictionary and an anagram solver with instant access to over 4 million words and definitions. In the future, the developers also plan to add a tournament mode for high-level competitions.
Scrabble was officially invented in 1948, although it stemmed from a game called Lexiko invented by Alfred Mosher Butts more than a decade ago. It didn’t really catch fire until a few years later, but it’s been a board game staple since then and the subject of several daytime TV game shows. A National Scrabble Championship has been held every year since 1978 (the finals actually aired on the US sports network ESPN for several years), and in 2004 it was inducted into the National Toy Arcade.
Recently, there’s been a surge of interest in easy-to-play word games with the help of Wordle, a free word game that came out in January. Wordle is more Mastermind than Scrabble, but it produces a similarly smart feel in a fun, accessible way: smart enough to entertain, but not smart enough to be objectionable.
“The popularity of word games further validates and proves what we’ve always known: word games are beloved experiences that play an important role in the lives of many people around the world,” said Beth Nations, VP of Casual Games Growth at Scopely. “For Scopely, the rise of Wordle just helps remind people how much they love wordplay.”
