The Warcraft Arc Rumble reveal didn’t knock any socks off, but Warcraft fans seem mostly okay

Blizzard’s first Warcraft mobile game is a Clash Royale-style strategy game called Warcraft Rumble, and while the larger World of Warcraft community doesn’t fully know more about it, it’s Don’t totally hate this game either.

Community response to the mobile game has been mixed. Many in the wider World of Warcraft community, especially on Reddit, say the game is not their style, and that Warcraft Mobile doesn’t seem to cater to Blizzard’s traditional audience. While there are plenty of fans who say they’ll give the game a try, there seems to be an equal number of Warcraft players who seem completely content to let the Warcraft arc rumble past them.

The game has at least received more positive fan feedback than Blizzard’s previous mobile game, Diablo. When the first Diablo mobile game was announced at BlizzCon 2018, the fan backlash was furious and swift. Many who were there and watching at home were looking forward to the release of Diablo IV or Diablo II remake, only to get a mobile game instead.

Blizzard’s Warcraft Arc Rumble announcement neatly avoids repeating the mistakes of Diablo Immortal by staying away from any other Blizzard-related announcements and taking a more laid-back, casual approach. The announcement is focused on helping convey the excitement of some of the developers working on the project, and clarifying what the game is and what it’s for.

This time the expectations were set properly. Instead of making fans look forward to a new World of Warcraft expansion announcement and getting a mobile game, Blizzard wisely left out the big Dragonflight news a few weeks ago and set clear expectations for its upcoming announcement, clarifying the air and Let the Warcraft Arclight Rumble have its own chance to shine. That likely had a lot to do with the announcement’s popularity, which, while not entirely positive, didn’t cause another Blizzard controversy that Blizzard has endured amid ongoing sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuits.

While the original announcement of Diablo Immortal crashed and burned, three years later, the game seems to be back on track. Diablo Immortal is coming to PC and mobile with full cross-game and cross-progression. That doesn’t seem to be the case with Warcraft Arclight Rumble, which has only been released for mobile devices so far. But fans didn’t seem to care too much. After all, it’s a mobile-style game, not a handheld RPG akin to World of Warcraft itself.

Many Warcraft players have expressed how cool it would be if mobile games could really be played in World of Warcraft. Like the Warcraft-themed card game Hearthstone, Arc Rumble exists in World of Warcraft as a new hobby that can be played in taverns throughout Azeroth. While Hearthstone is referenced in World of Warcraft, it cannot be played in-game. The same may be true of Warcraft Arclight Rumble, but fans can still dream.

Thoughts on Arc Rumble:
– I love cosmic games like Hearthstone. Maybe we’ll see NPCs play it in Dragonflight, like we did in Hearthstone?
– It also means that having them play in WoW like Gwent seems like a big missed opportunity.

Given that this is a free-to-play mobile game, players are concerned about how Blizzard will monetize the Warcraft Arclight Rumble. Quite a few fans noticed that the game’s movie starts with someone dropping a coin into the coin slot, which certainly sets an interesting tone. But from what Blizzard says, the game will be focused on fairness, with only one currency that can be bought but also earned in-game, and no random elements like loot boxes. Our own hands-on experience with games shows that many of the things that give mobile games a “bad reputation” don’t make it into beta versions of games, no matter what it’s worth.

Warcraft Arclight Rumble doesn’t have a release date yet, but interested players can pre-register for the game right now, and beta testing is about to begin.
