AMD crypto mining rig rumored to use recycled PS5 chips

ASRock and AMD are selling a new crypto mining rig, but it apparently uses a broken PS5 chip instead of the best graphics card.Discovered by hardware leakers Komachithe server comes with 12 AMD BC-250 APUs and costs about $14,800.

The system is currently listed as a “barebone” mining rig on the Slovenian website Bolha, which claims it is a “premium computer for cryptocurrency mining operations, guaranteed by the recognized manufacturer ASRock.” The machine’s PCIe APU array It comes with 16GB of RAM and two beefy 1,200W power supplies, but that list skips specific CPU specs.

In terms of crypto performance, ASRock’s rig is said to generate 610 MHps when mining Ethereum. For context, an unlocked Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 GPU can hit 135 MHps while consuming 300W. Naturally, this suggests you’ll need about five high-end GPUs to match the capabilities of the ASRock server, which means you can save a few cents by opting for the former.

The increased interest in crypto mining is partly to blame for GPU shortages, but the AMD and ASRock joint venture could lure miners away from gaming PC parts. That said, Nvidia and AMD Radeon graphics cards are getting cheaper, so graphics cards with unlocked hashrates, including the upcoming Intel Arc Alchemist, may still end up disappearing from crypto farms.
