AMD FSR 2.0 launching in Q2 2022 with time upgrades

AMD has revealed its plans to release an updated version of its FidelityFX super-resolution upscaling technology, unsurprisingly called FSR 2.0. The company boldly claims that it “can deliver almost indistinguishable or even better image quality than native.” We can expect the latest version of the technology to appear in games starting in the second quarter of 2022, with Deathloop being the first one using it.

Unlike other competing upgrades like Nvidia DLSS or the upcoming Intel XeSS, FSR 2.0 still doesn’t have any kind of machine learning. Instead, AMD engineers have redesigned the algorithm behind FidelityFX super-resolution to include temporal data, moving away from the simpler spatial solutions in previous versions.

While AMD isn’t sharing performance metrics at this time, it will be sharing more details on FSR 2.0 at some GDC-sponsored panel on March 23, which you can read more about here. In the meantime, you can get a first look at this new version of FidelityFX Super Resolution in action by reading further.

Below are some screenshots from Deathloop comparing a 4K native image with two versions in FSR’s “Quality” and “Performance” presets.

Here’s the full image, including native 4K and both versions of the FSR in quality and performance modes. Can you tell the difference?

Whether AMD Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) will ultimately benefit from the FSR 2.0 update is yet to be confirmed, but it’s likely because it’s essentially a driver-level implementation of the upgrade technology.
