AMD’s mid-range Navi 33 GPU can beat the 6900 XT
🖥️
It’s always interesting to speculate on the relative performance of next-generation GPUs. There’s a new leak suggesting that AMD’s next-generation Navi 33 GPU, said to be for the RX 7600 or 7700, could end up being faster and less power-hungry than the current flagship, the RX 6900 XT.
Rumors come from @greymon55 (via Hardware Times). This suggests that the Navi 33 GPU may have FP32 performance over the 6900 XT. FP32 is a measure of floating point performance. It’s far from the only relevant measure of graphics performance, but it’s a good sign that AMD has a strong architectural foundation.
The source went on to say that the first GPUs are being tested internally by AMD, a process dubbed “nourish‘ after the initial chip tapeout. It is believed to be a monolithic chip built on TSMC’s 6nm node. Greymon further believes that the GPU will eventually consume between 220 and 250W of power.
Again, this is just a rumor, but if AMD can beat the 6900 XT while maintaining similar power to the 6700 XT, performance-per-watt bodes well for the next generation of mid-range GPUs.
As we move deeper into 2022, we’re getting closer to launching the next generation of GPUs. Rumor has it that both the Ada Lovelace and the RDNA 3 cards could deliver a massive performance boost. We also can’t forget Intel’s Arc Alchemist cards.
But it’s not all good. Other rumors suggest that high-end cards may have a very steep TDP and require a new power supply with a 12-pin power connector. Whatever form, performance level, and energy efficiency the next-gen cards end up taking, if we do get them, it would be a step in the right direction!
