Assassin’s Creed devs influence Rainbow Six Siege’s new operation

The new Rainbow Six Siege season kicks off this week, titled Veil of Demons, and it introduces a brand new operator for one of the best multiplayer games on PC. Azami is a Japanese bodyguard whose gadget, the Kiba Barrier, acts a lot like the Hidden Blade from the Assassin’s Creed series — which isn’t entirely coincidental.

Fans were quick to wait until the latest Rainbow Six Siege season arrives in Ubisoft’s popular FPS game, and the Year 7 roadmap features new maps, gameplay changes, and more coming this year. On top of that, however, is new operator Azami, whose Kiba Barrier gadget actually fixes the bug.

The Kiba gadget is deployed via a knife that Azami sticks out of his sleeve and then throws, but the animation appears to be partly inspired by the iconic Hidden Blade from Ubisoft’s own Assassin’s Creed games. We spoke to Alex Karpazis, creative director at Siege, and asked if this was an intentional reference.

“Originally, we didn’t know the character was going to be from Japan,” Karpazis explained, “so previous iterations actually made the device more of a butterfly knife — they just interacted with it in a unique way. Then when they When you flip it out and throw it out, it unfolds like a Kiba now.”

However, when the Azami was created, it became a slender Japanese kunai blade. “We wanted to make sure that the equipment matched the character’s aesthetic and its origins,” the director told us.

As for the Assassin’s Creed connection, the team didn’t deliberately make Kiba look like a Hidden Blade, but the developers behind the iconic weapon are working on the game right now. “We actually have several developers from Assassin’s Creed: Siege,” Karpazis said. “We had an original rigger rigging the Hidden Blade in Assassin’s Creed. So, we’ve got the knowledge there.”

“It was actually fun to bring it to the Siege world,” adds Karpazis.

For more of our interview with Siege’s creative director, Azami started out as a green slime operator called Flubber, and Karpazis also told us that he’s “sorry about any games that try our recipe right now.”
