Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 7 Unleashes DnD’s Barbarian Profession

Announced at today’s Inferno team meeting, the long-awaited barbarian class is finally making its way to Baldur’s Gate 3 via Patch 7 of the Early Access RPG. Of course, that’s not all, as the new update adds a treasure trove of new features, changes, and bug fixes to DnD games that you’d be hard-pressed to put into one package.

Like all classes in Baldur’s Gate 3, the Barbarian has two subclasses, based on those in the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition Player’s Handbook: Berserker and Heart of the Wild. As you might expect, a subclass of Berserker is all about taking advantage of your fury, recklessly doing as much damage as possible to anything unfortunate enough to bump into your path. With the ability of melee weapons to attack twice in one turn, and the ability to enhance their improvisational weapons, Berserkers should be an extremely violent and valuable member of any side.

Heart of the Wild, on the other hand, is most similar to the original path of the totem warrior in the tabletop game. This subclass has a choice of five “Beast Hearts” that have a transformative effect on the barbarian’s rage ability. For example, Bear Heart increases damage resistance, while Wolf Heart grants a team-wide attack roll buff, in addition to offering unique abilities like “Eagle Strike” and everyone’s favorite spell: Talk to Animals.

Impromptu melee and throwing weapons also debut in Patch 7, allowing you to weaponize environmental items like barrels and chairs to fight unsuspecting enemies. You can even use said unwitting enemies against their friends if it pleases you (the idea certainly pleases us.) This feature isn’t limited to combat either, meaning players will likely be in true DnD fashion Find lots of unorthodox uses.

Larian also has more magical items hidden in the dark corners of the world of Baldur’s Gate 3 for you to discover, but the developers want to keep you on your toes with the “room portal”. Now, when you first explore the inner area, the layout and content of connecting rooms will remain hidden until you gather your party and venture into the unknown. Like the fog doors in Dark Souls, these should add a new level of tension to exploration and catch your team off guard from ambush.

It’s time to unleash your wild side.

The UI has also received a major overhaul, which should make the management of all the shiny new loot in your party more ergonomic and legible. You can now filter action types and items via the categories tab at the bottom of the character toolbar, which should be especially useful for spellcasters who manage their spell slots. Additionally, actions now show potential damage ranges, as well as the number and type of dice rolled for them, saving you mental arithmetic.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has so much content in Patch 7, it’s hard to believe there’s more to come. We haven’t even talked about Darkvision and visibility changes and the plethora of bug fixes in the RPG, which you can read about in the lengthy patch notes on Steam. Just click the link.
