Baldur’s Gate 3 will be the ‘benchmark’ DnD 5e game
Larian Studios wants to make Baldur’s Gate 3 the “benchmark” DnD 5e game — the benchmark against which all other Dungeons & Dragons games are. In Steam Early Access, the developers are working hard to make that happen, and in a new interview, Larian CEO Swen Vincke explains how much the studio has expanded to make it happen.
When asked by PC Gamer how Baldur’s Gate 3 fits into the entire DnD franchise, Vincke said, “The baseline incarnation of version 5 in video games. That’s what we’re trying to do. I think it’s already pretty good, and it’s changing. Better.” Vincke points out that Larian now has nearly 400 employees — ten times as many as when Divinity: Original Sin was being developed — and working toward that ambition is a big reason the studio has grown so quickly.
“If I force them to lower their ambitions, lower what they want to do, I’m really going to have a revolution within the company,” Vincke said. Many Larian developers are fans of the original game, and it’s important for the studio to not take shortcuts when making sure players don’t take certain paths. “We can do a lot of simple cuts,” Vincke said. “But then it wouldn’t be the game it needed to be.”
Oh, and, Vincke told PC Gamer, Gnomes will also be joining the list of playable DnD games.
There are plenty of DnD video games, but few have attempted to faithfully recreate the tabletop game’s ruleset since 3.5 days. Solasta replicates the DnD 5e rules, and even if it’s not an official set, Baldur’s Gate 3 is in a class of its own on budget and scale.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available in Steam Early Access. Developers expect it to be fully rolled out sometime in 2023. To see more RPG games in the meantime, you can follow this link.
