The Riddler may be targeting the caped crusader with his riddle in Matt Reeves’ Batman, but the film’s end credits tease that the Quixotic quiz guru has us in it too some riddles. Now that those mysteries have been solved, they seem to point to what we might see in an unannounced but seemingly inevitable sequel (via IGN). Potential spoilers for Batman are below.

A pivotal moment in Batman is when the Riddler points ol’ Bats and his good friend James Gordon to a website, rataalada.com.Of course, with a story like this, a fictional website would never only A fictional website, in fact, the page offers some riddles for fans to solve. However, along with the riddle came a secret message, which was written with the riddleman’s question mark filling the cipher. Now, Reddit user /u/vengeance22 has decoded the message, which reads:

“You think I’m done, but maybe you don’t know the whole truth. Every ending is a new beginning. Something’s coming.”

Of course, this seems to point to a sequel to the film that includes The Riddler as a returning character, just like the film’s final scene. But also of interest are the lists that initially look like IP addresses used in command-line traceroutes. They’re not IP at all, but important dates and release numbers in Batman’s 80+ year history.

For example, 27.50.19.39 refers to Issue 27 of Detective Comics, May 1939. The serial number refers to the introduction of Catwoman, Joker, Penguin, The Riddler, Carmine Falcone and Alfred Pennyworth.

The last one refers to Batman’s release date, but the second-to-last address points to Corrections.arkham.gov – not a real site due to the .gov extension – referring to Batman #258, Published in October 1974. In this comic, two faces emerge from Arkham Asylum. As IGN noted, this is the debut of Arkham Asylum itself. Some fans have speculated that the second film might include Two-Face as one of Batman’s antagonists. However, since all other dates refer to the first appearance, Arkham itself seems more likely to be the reason for the listing.

Batman’s final scene features the Riddler and another prisoner (almost certainly the Joker), shown in only a partial side view, talking about Riddler’s failure and the possibility of cooperation. Additionally, Batman’s HBO Max spinoff series recently “evolved” from a show about Gotham PD to a show about Arkham Asylum itself. So while it’s a joke, it’s not enough here to draw any conclusions about what it might be saying. It could be alluding to a sequel or spin-off, or just believing that Arkham is an integral part of the Batman mythology.

Batman’s performance at the box office was good enough to win a sequel. Be sure to read our in-depth look at the movie’s ending, and why we’d like to see live-action Batman explore some of the Dark Knight’s unfamiliar villains.
