Battlefield 2042 drops zombie mode after becoming an XP farm

A day after its launch, EA pulled Zombie Survival, Battlefield 2042’s latest community-made mode, after fans discovered it had been turned into an XP farm. Justin Wiebe, senior design director at Ripple Effect Studios, said the mode will require “going back to the studio for a while.”

Wiebe hopes Zombie Survival can be fixed to make it more “standard gameplay”. Additionally, the developers mentioned that the team developing Battlefield 2042 has “tightened up” their review process to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again. “Thank you for your patience and understanding,” Wiebe said.

We’ve removed zombie mode and replaced it with a gun game. Hopefully we can fix it in the future and make it consistent with standard game progression. We’ve also tightened our review process to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Yes, I heard it. I think this model has potential, but it will take a while to go back to the studio. In any case, we need to focus on more important issues, such as improving the core XP progress of BF Portal. https://t.co/EX9cetm6YB

Zombie Survival is a fan-made game genre released in Battlefield 2042’s Portal mode. A team of four human soldiers come together to fight off endless waves of zombies until rescue arrives. However, things didn’t go as planned, and players found they could use Zombie Survival to earn XP for other elements of Battlefield 2042. This broke the game’s overall XP balance, which is at least partly why EA removed it.

Wiebe admits that zombie survival shouldn’t have been added to Battlefield 2042 in the first place. “I think our desire to create an interesting zombie mode prevented us from seeing such a simple thing as its effect on progression. I’m very sorry for the difficulty this has caused,” Wiebe wrote.

I’m not going to lie, this one should not have passed our review process. I think our desire to create an interesting zombie mode prevented us from seeing such a simple thing as its effect on the process. I am very sorry for the difficulty this has caused. https://t.co/01MXOdWGN5

Battlefield 2042 is the fifth-selling game in the U.S. in 2021, though EA has yet to release specific sales figures for the futuristic military shooter.
