Battlefield 2042 map design improvements announced

According to a blog post by DICE, the map design of Battlefield 2042 has changed a lot. DICE identified five map issues it wanted to improve, including traversal, strength, line of sight, path, and coverage. On all of these design elements, DICE wants player feedback to help guide the direction of change.

  • traverse–In response to players complaining that the game feels like a “walking simulator” due to the distance between the Flags, DICE aims to position the Base Spawn and Flags to improve the game experience.
  • strength–DICE believes that the Breakthrough 128 player mode may be too confusing, especially with the number of players and vehicles. The developers are “reviewing whether keeping Breakthrough at 128 players makes sense versus 64 players, or whether we think reducing the total number of vehicles that can spawn ensures their presence isn’t as overwhelming.”
  • sight— Regarding how often players are targeted by distant enemies, improvements to the line of sight design will create more obstacles to hide behind. “We feel, and hear from you guys, that there’s too much open and flat space on some of our maps right now,” DICE said. The long-term goal is also to reduce the prevalence of ranged combat.
  • path–DICE also plans to create clearer paths between objectives to keep the gameplay “combat focused”.
  • cover– Related to line of sight issues, DICE wants to add more places to hide from enemy fire and reduce open spaces if necessary.

These are ambitious map design tweaks, and DICE says it won’t be able to implement these changes on all maps at once. While DICE has incorporated the aforementioned map design qualities into new maps in development, it will first update older maps as needed. DICE will start with the Kaleidoscope in Conquest and Breakthrough mode, and the new Kaleidoscope map will arrive in time for Season 1.

DICE has emphasized several times throughout the blog post that it is looking for player feedback, so if you have a lot of ideas on how to improve the gameplay – now is your chance to shine.

EA’s Battlefield 2042 has had a tumultuous launch since its launch. Players noticed the number of bugs present and were generally dissatisfied with the experience, even launching a petition for a refund of the game. However, DICE has been actively working on implementing changes, and the latest update aims to improve game balance. The first season was also delayed due to DICE’s need to make “some major decisions” regarding live service support for Battlefield 2042, and is now likely to launch in early summer 2022.
