Bethesda is using its launcher and migrating to Steam

The Bethesda launcher will say goodbye later this year. As the developer and publisher of great titles like The Elder Scrolls series, Fallout 4, and the upcoming space epic Starfield, it’s shutting down its platform and migrating its games to Steam.

“We encourage our Bethesda.net Launcher community to continue their experience on Steam,” Bethesda explained in a blog post. “In early April, you’ll be able to migrate your Bethesda.net library to your Steam account” – so any game you own on the company’s launcher will be available on Steam for free, and all your purchases will end up on Steam Go to their new home. Therefore, virtual currency balances and add-ons such as DLC and cosmetic items will automatically come to Steam.

It’s also worth noting that “many” game saves will also transfer to Steam, although you may need to manually copy some. “Currently, we expect that almost all save progress can be transferred automatically or manually, with the exception of Wolfenstein: Youngblood, which cannot be transferred at this time,” the studio explained. Don’t worry if manual copying malware finally works for you though – instructions on how to manually transfer game saves are coming “soon”.

In terms of timeframe, you’ll be able to start moving your items to Steam sometime in “early April,” Bethesda said. At that point, the company will provide “detailed instructions” to players. The Bethesda launcher will remain open until May, after which the company will shut it down, so it’s a good idea to start moving your game once these instructions are through. You won’t lose access to the Bethesda.net library in May – you just won’t be able to play there anymore.

If you’re a Fallout 76 player, you’re probably wondering how this will affect you. Bethesda has published a dedicated blog about online RPGs, which you can view here. All in all, if you link your Steam and Bethesda.net accounts, you’ll be able to maintain your character and progress. Atoms will also transfer, as will your season progress, CAMP builds, friend lists, and Fallout First membership (if applicable). Be sure to check out the full rundown to see how it applies to Fallout 76, though.

The Elder Scrolls Online is not affected by the shutdown of the Bethesda launcher.
