Blizzard chief says Warcraft, Diablo and Overwatch news is on the way

Without BlizzCon (or BlizzCon) this year, fans of games like World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo are wondering when new announcements about the future of each game will be made. According to Blizzard leader Mike Ibarra, the next updates to these franchises will happen “in the next few weeks.”

Ybarra’s update came in the form of a tweet, itself a response to fan comments that Blizzard is hiring for the survival game in the new universe. One fan tweeted that Blizzard might want to “put some human effort” into some of Blizzard’s existing games, to which Ybarra said:

Blizzard is a large studio, and we also have a talented and growing team supporting live games. You’ll hear more from Warcraft and Overwatch in the coming weeks. Diablo will follow. stay tuned!

Major announcements for some of Blizzard’s biggest franchises (like World of Warcraft and Overwatch) usually take place at BlizzCon, usually in November. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has created trouble for the system. Blizzard transitioned to an online BlizzCon event in February 2021, and plans to host a similar online BlizzCon event in February 2022. BlizzCon 2022 was later canceled due to the ongoing fallout from multiple sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuits and investigations involving Activision Blizzard.

Blizzard said at the time of the event’s cancellation that “reimagining” the future of BlizzCon will take time, and that future news about Blizzard’s various franchises will be released through official franchise channels, with members of the BlizzCon team supporting these efforts.

This means that news like what will be the next expansion for World of Warcraft, status updates for Overwatch 2, and how Diablo IV is going (to name a few) is no longer tied to the big fan event and can be found at Announced when the development team is ready. The fact that Blizzard casually tweeted out a brand new survival game IP is proof that these big announcements could come at any time.

Activision Blizzard is currently being acquired by Microsoft for $69 billion, pending regulatory approval. It’s unclear what the acquisition will mean for some of Blizzard’s biggest franchises, which end up on Microsoft’s Game Pass service or become exclusives to the Xbox console. Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2, which never had an official release window, were both recently delayed, and a report on Activision Blizzard’s quarterly earnings call said both games would benefit from more development time.
