Blizzard is cracking down on the community that promotes World of Warcraft

Citing “increasing disruption to the gaming experience,” Blizzard updated World of Warcraft’s end-user license agreement to ban organizations that post ads and provide in-game boosts and other services.

Accounts found to be involved in organized booster groups, especially those operating across multiple servers, can now be suspended or permanently banned.

“We urge all such organizations to immediately cease operations in World of Warcraft in order to maintain uninterrupted access to the game,” wrote World of Warcraft community manager Kaivax in an official post on the game’s forums.

While organized “booster communities” can now be banned, the post makes it clear that individuals and even in-game guilds can still use the game’s trading chat channel to buy or sell in-game services in exchange for gold.

Boosting has been a hot topic in the WoW community for some time now, with many players discussing whether the game is essentially “pay-to-win” as players can buy gold by buying and selling WoW tokens directly from Blizzard. These coins can then be used to buy boosters from personal or professional boosting services, which may include endgame content like raids or higher difficulty Myth + Dungeon.

This is just the latest update to Blizzard’s MMO aimed at cracking down on in-game advertising for various services in and out of the game. In the game’s latest patch 9.1.5, Blizzard made such a provision that only accounts linked to a Blizzard Authenticator can create custom lists in the game’s group finder tool, hoping the new restrictions will reduce in-game advertising .

Square Enix recently made similar changes to Final Fantasy XIV’s terms of service, which in addition to cracking down on accounts that offer in-game goods or services in exchange for real money, also prohibits players from selling in-game services such as tax clearance.
