Call of Duty Mobile has reached a huge new revenue milestone. According to SensorTower, the game has now cost more than $1.5 billion globally across iOS and Android.

Developed by Timi Studios, the game originally launched in October 2019, so after nearly 2.5 years, it has spent $1.5 billion. In May 2021, Activision announced that Call of Duty: Mobile has reached 500 million downloads, which is roughly one download for every 15 people on the planet.

SensorTower said 2021 was the best year ever for Call of Duty: Mobile in terms of revenue, with spending up 45% compared to 2020 sales. The group said the December 2020 launch of Call of Duty: Mobile in China helped drive new spending in 2021, with spending in China alone reaching $104.5 million.

Globally, Call of Duty: Mobile will be No. 14 on the 2021 mobile revenue rankings. Looking at mobile shooters specifically, Call of Duty: Mobile came in third, behind Garena Free Fire and PUBG Mobile. The launch of Call of Duty: Mobile and other games helped total mobile shooter spending grow 10.5% in 2021 to $6.3 billion.

Geographically, the U.S. was the highest-grossing market for Call of Duty: Mobile to date, at $647 million (or 43% of total revenue) in the U.S. Japan and China accounted for the second and third highest-grossing places for Call of Duty: Mobile.

Other major shooter franchises that started on PC/console will also move to mobile in the future, notably EA’s Apex Legends and Battlefield Mobile.

As for Activision, the company is investing further, recently launching a new developer, Solid State Studios, which is working on another Call of Duty game for mobile.

In broader Call of Duty news, the 2023 Call of Duty game has reportedly been pushed back to 2024, a move quite different from Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard and all of its franchises and studios. To fill that void, Treyarch is reportedly helping to develop a new free-to-play game for 2023.
