Cold War RTS Warno set in a compelling alternative history in 1989

Cold War-era RTS game Warno is gearing up for Early Access, and developer Eugen Systems is taking an interesting approach to its setting. The studio is keen to incorporate historical battle orders, but it also needs a fictitious war to pit its NATO against Warsaw Pact factions — so, as it explained in its latest development blog, it’s Several key places adjust the history.

Vono’s first major disagreement with history was a bloodless coup that ousted reformist Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev and his allies in 1987.Historically, Gorbachev was re-elected in 1990 and stepped down after the August 1991 coup, but in Vono, party hardliners took control of the Soviet Union earlier, using Troika Represents the Communist Party, the Army and the KGB.

In the game’s novel, this led to a swift condemnation from the Western superpowers, who imposed new sanctions on the Soviet Union. U.S. President Ronald Reagan listened to his most hawkish advisers, scrapped a major nuclear treaty, NATO stepped up military training exercises in Western Europe, and observed weather in the key Fulda Canyon – Germany’s A highly militarized area, seen as a natural entry for Russian tanks into Europe and vice versa.

It’s an interesting alt-history production, all to provide the excuse needed, including Eugen having been busy putting together all the harrowing details in the active battle formations around Fulda Gap during that time. Warno will include 16 historic battlegroups, each representing the level of a single platoon, Eugen said. In contrast, Steel Division 2’s battle order is only down to the company level.

Warno will also include four Army General campaigns that you will experience in Steel Division II. Unlike a series of missions in a traditional RTS, the Army General campaign is a dynamic wargame-style turn-based event that generates real-time skirmishes based on the movement of units on the campaign map.

Warno will include multiplayer in six countries, namely the US, USSR, West Germany, East Germany, France and the UK. Over 600 units are planned, each with historical models, variants, camouflages, weapons, and other tedious details that make this type of game appealing to military history buffs.

Eugen also hinted at plans for a post-launch DLC expansion, which will add new Army General campaigns in the German Plains to the north and Czechoslovakia to the south. You’ll be able to take part when Warno enters Early Access on Steam on January 20.
