Command & Conquer: Renegade Remake’s Tiberium Sun Expansion Targets Summer
Renegade X: Firestorm – the long-in-development Tiberium Sun expansion for a free fan remake of Command & Conquer: Renegade – is targeting a summer 2022 release date two years after the project’s official announcement.
In case you didn’t know, Command & Conquer: Renegade is an ambitious first- and third-person shooter from the iconic RTS series released in 2002. It’s clunky and the single-player campaign sucks, but there’s a loyal fan base growing around the unique multiplayer.
Renegade X is a completely free, fan-made remake of the game Unreal Engine that was released in public beta in 2014 and has been added ever since. In June 2020, indie developer Totem Arts announced Renegade X: Firestorm – an expansion pack based on the alien invasion events in Command & Conquer 3. Back in December, Totem Arts promised “great things will happen in 2022” – it seems they might be referring to Firestorm, as the developer revealed on Discord that the expansion “is expected to be released in the second quarter of 2022.” “.
Renegade X: Firestorm’s vehicles, weapons, and maps are all based on the vehicles, weapons, and maps from C&C3: Tiberium Sun – and it’s reportedly more of a battlefield than the usual Renegade gameplay. It should be noted, however, that while the planned release is summer 2022, the team says the official release date is still “when it’s done” – so fans shouldn’t get their hopes up, as fan projects can easily slip.
While the team dropped the Command & Conquer name and made Renegade X available for free, EA appears to be very happy with the project — even allowing Totem Arts to accept donations in January 2021, according to the project’s creators. That’s great for them, especially since Command & Conquer: Remake came out in 2020, and EA doesn’t seem interested in returning to the franchise itself.
