On February 28, Marvel boss Kevin Feige offered a major clue to where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is headed in a speech honoring actor Benedict Cumberbatch’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. The event was broadcast live by Variety.

“I remember our first meeting was arranged as a general, and we wanted to pitch him this great role, before we could, and he said, ‘So tell me about Doctor Strange,’ because you know,” Feig said. Say. “You know what it’s going to be, and you always see a lot of potential in this character. Because of that, you’re the anchor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the only actor who can guide us through the madness of the multiverse.”

Until recently, the MCU arguably revolved around Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man — something that has to change as the actor announces he’s done playing the role. As the recent Doctor Strange 2 trailer indicated, the MCU has big plans for Cumberbatch’s character, hoping to take the character to some interesting new and disastrous places. The trailer depicts the disintegration of the multiverse due to the strange spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home – Strange Can’t Remember Peter Parker, and the apparently not so simple effects of the spell and its subsequent reversal. Check out the trailer above.

Feige also added, “Benedict has turned the character into an icon, appearing in three of the first six films of all time. [Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home]. It’s been quite a journey. “

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters May 6.
