You can’t walk more than a few feet in the Elden Ring without tripping over messages from other players. These messages can be helpful, harmful, or stupid, and they can encourage players to jump off cliffs to their death, or find secret doors with no trapdoors, or alert them that there must be dogs no a dog. The messages can even get a little annoying after 60 hours of play, but they’re a much-loved tradition carried over from the early Dark Souls games.

But now Elden Ring isn’t the only open-world RPG where you can find “try the jump”, “liar ahead” and “try the finger but hole” messages from other players. A modder has added an Elden Ring-like messaging system to Fallout: New Vegas, so couriers can now communicate with each other.

Building Bridges mod is a plugin created by modder Tomminfinite that allows New Vegas players to leave messages in the world for other players to find. Players with the mod installed will see that the exact location of the message was left by another player, even if the other player left the message a few minutes ago. Below you can see the asynchronous multiplayer message system at work, with one player commenting on the top of the cliff advising to “try the jump”, and another message warning of the mine trap – although its location too close to my self helped a lot. That’s some good sadness.

Information placed on the world appears as weathered paper on the ground, perfect for the aesthetics of a post-apocalyptic New Vegas. And, just like in Elden Ring, players can rate each other’s messages, with positive ratings giving the message’s creator a benefit:

“People can like your posts, which increases their ratings and yours,” says the mod’s page. “Ratings give you levels. With each new level, you can put more messages at the same time, and your messages can be longer. You can’t see who’s messages you like, and neither do others.”

Here’s how it works:

  • To post your message – Press “B” (default) to launch the BB menu and select the “Post Message” option.
  • At level 1, you can have up to 20 simultaneous messages with up to 115 symbols.
  • Currently only ASCII characters (English letters) are supported.
  • To like another user’s message – Activate the message and press “Like this message”.
  • You can gain levels by increasing your level. When people like your messages, your rating will increase.
  • Only one message can be left per cell (inner or outer).
  • World space (non-internal) consists of small independent external cells. You can see which cell you are in in the BB menu.
  • Each external cell can contain up to 10 messages. When you’re outside, typically 8-9 non-interior units are loaded.
  • Each inner cell can contain up to 35 messages.

Naturally, you need an internet connection for the Building Bridges mod to work. Messages you publish are sent to the server, and messages you find are downloaded from the same place. Yes, Building Bridges is compatible with other mods, so if you use a mod like Project Brazil or New Vegas Bounties, you can leave and find messages in those world spaces too. There’s also a reporting system if you come across news you find objectionable.
